The North Korean army used Soviet tanks to overrun South Korea, which prompted the Unites States to come to South Korea’s aid. The war was occasioned by the hopeful unification of South and North Korea as well as the growing concern of the spread of communism. Before the war, both South and North Korea existed as provisional governments that competed to control the Korean peninsula.
Therefore, the causes of the Korean War were both political and ideological. Politically, the Soviet Union saw the Korean peninsula as a facilitator to attack Russia, and demanded loyalty from Korea.
