Mostly occurred in the south, but very often recognized in some northern states. Southern states believed slavery was an important part of their area. Slave work was used on farms, ranches, plantations, and crop fields. Slaves were used for harsh work, low pay and low support from their owners. As some slaves had a very harsh live, some did not. Slaves have been known to be whipped, beaten, slashed, and sometimes killed. A fugitive slave in Georgia had a very crual owner. He was beat because he found a watermelon and ate it for his survival needs. The beatens varried from getting hit by cow-hides to bull whips(10). No one deserves to be treated like that as some slaves were. Slave life can be very different as well. For example, in The Horrors of Slavery the authors includes "the writer tells us that she was not whipped- the gravest wrongs offered to her were the libertine overtures of her master." As some slaves were viciously beaten and attacked, others were not. Others were treated well. Northern states did not use slaves because it is a more industrial civilization. Although slavery was encouraged throughtout the south, the north had different views. For example, "There is a prevalent conviction that slavery is wrong; and that it is a curse to all who feels its influence"(8). Northern territories did not feel slavery was right by any mean. There should have been a law in the south to end slavery before its popularity rised. A compromise was inducted during this time period which led even more tension between the southern and northen states. The Missouri Compromise was not promoted by the north because they felt the south was already to powerful. This compromise let each slave count as three-fifths of a person. This was objected by the north because that engaged more population in the south which could potentially create the south to be even more powerful. Disagreements should have been resolved from the north and south to help end slavery once and for all. As a resut of this long term factor, slavery should have been considered a horrific idea in the beginning of the country as a unreliable use of people. Therefore slavery should have been abolished long before it's use was considered valuable to southern
