I feel like boredom took toll on the girls because is in the late 1600’s they didn’t have nothing better to do. So I feel like the girls wanted something to do besides living their regular lives. I also feel like the girls were avoiding trouble because witchcraft was a serious crime back in those days. The girls could’ve been hung or some type of cruel punishment would
have been given to them. Who hasn't tried to avoid trouble?
The whole town had a strong believe in occult including the girls so when they got caught dancing in the woods using their believe would be a great excuse. Me personally I don’t think there is a such thing as a witch i feel it’s all make believe but I could be wrong my point is people back in the 1600’s believed differently especially the Puritans. There is no telling how the girls came to dance in the woods but it could be because the town had a strong believe in occult and the girls needed to come up with a good excuse to avoid trouble.
The town of Salem, Massachusetts had a lot of disputes and rivalries. It also had a lot of personal differences between the towns folks. So when the girls were busted they had a easy way out because they could just blame people they didn’t like and accuse them of witchcraft. For example Abigail the preacher’s niece had a secret affair with John Proctor a farmer or the town. Mr. proctor cut off the relationship between him and Abigail and to get back at Proctor and his wife, Abigail acused Elizabeth Proctor John Proctor’s wife of witchcraft so she could get closer to John.
The last two causes I have is a cold weather theory and an ergot poisoning theory. The cold weather theory is about Salem and the cold weather there the girl’s had something else to make as an excuse. This one don’t make as much since but it’s a possible cause. The ergot poisoning theory is about crops gone bad and the some of the townsfolk (The girls) had got some of the bad crop.
