The San Francisco earthquake shook and caused major damage for the city, and the people of San Francisco had no idea that the quake was coming; they were not ready or prepared for it. The earthquake came unexpectedly. The structure of San Francisco’s city hall shook early in the morning on April 18 (Smith, 2006). People of San Francisco thought it was over after the earthquake, but it was just the beginning. The earthquake lasted a lot longer than an earthquake normally does, and it caused great damage for San Francisco (Chippendale, 2001). The San Francisco earthquake was depressing for the people of San Francisco, because even before the quake, San Francisco had many problems. San Francisco went through a depression during the late 1800s and then had to go through the tragic earthquake in the early 1900s (Bronson, 1986). After the quake occurred, most of the buildings in the city were in pieces and very few were still standing. From the massive quake that took over San Francisco, most of the buildings sank and there was a long range of how far they sank going to inches and even feet. People in San Francisco did not know what was going to happen next, they didn’t know that the next threat would kill people from being sick. After the quake hit San Francisco, the town went through a huge bubonic plague that took place in 1906. The city officials ignored it and pretended that it was never happening, and later it was reported that the plague had hit Chinatown hard (House and Steffens, 1989). Many people had to stand in the streets of what was once their beloved city, but was now burned to the ground. While people could not pay for the damage that the quake and fire had caused, people were left in the streets with no homes and no place to sleep. The fire that took over San Francisco left many people with no homes, but many people did not just have the threat from the fire but the insurance companies did not help with the damage that the massive fire had caused (Bronson, 1986). From the insurance companies not paying for the damage that the quake had caused, the people of San Francisco had many issues. Many stood in the streets not knowing what to do next, not knowing how to recover from what just happened.
