Right after 2:00, the Mississippi River was struck by an earthquake that was felt from other places like, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, and Norfolk. While people were trying to rebuild everything up, in the winter of January 23 and February 7 two huge earthquakes hit. Each of the earthquakes had a magnitude 7.5 or higher.
It was said that 8 year old Godfrey Lesieur had witnessed the ground looking as if it was rolling into waves. Michael Braunm had seen the river rise up to several feet. Geysers had shot mud, water, sand and coal high into the air. The water was blown up so high that it caused the parts of the river to run backwards. The earthquake was so strong that it made the Earth’s atmosphere dark, it made it so dark that even the lamps that many of the residence had didn't help at all to see.
Lights were seen in the ground due to the squeezing of crystal in the ground, this process is called Seismic Luminance. The air had a foul stench that it made it hard for everyone to breath, it is said that it smelled bad because of smug that had bits of dust in it from the eruption that had went from warm water to cold
