The most saddest part of this novel is when Celeste got separated apart from her parents. That is the most saddest part of this story because imagine just separating apart from your family. The protagonist will feel sad and depressed because she is missing her family. And including that you don’t know if you’re going to see them again because this story is taken place in the middle in a war.And there is a dictator taking over Chile due to the war. And being in another country. That got to be the scary and saddest part of the novel.

One of the most funniest part of the book, but also the most happiest part is when Celeste came back to Chile. Is the most funniest/happiest part in the book because when Celeste came back to her parents and

Connecting the snoring, the rain and Mama’s hair is to give the scene a calming and cozy atmosphere. This section of “Hair” compares all the safe and comforting things in Esperanza’s life to convey that when she experiences them it makes her feel secure. This is similar to a security blanket that children have as a baby, they hold them to feel safe when their parents are not close or all the time. Esperanza expressing that her mother’s hair comforts her, shows how close she is to her mother because just looking at her hair makes her feel safe. However, this was not the case for many children in Esperanza’s position, numerous parents would have financial and marriage problems at the least and when the stress would build up, they would take it out on their children. Many children needed something like Esperanza’s mother’s hair so that they would feel safe without looking for another more harmful way to distract themselves from the pressure of their daily lives. Furthermore, Esperanza was extremely fortunate because her parents loved her and was for the most part safe at home. The effect of linking Esperanza’s father’s snoring, the rain and her mama’s hair on the audience was to create a soothing ambience and take a break working about growing up and the dangers in that process. This chapter was the most serene chapter so far in the book because she is talking about peaceful things in her life. On the contrary, the other chapters (so far) have been discussing growing up and the pressures of developing into a woman/adult. The author wanted to discuss these pleasures to take a break from her troubles so that the story would not become dark. In conclusion, the author wrote the book like how Esperanza lived and thought, she was constantly reminded of the troubles of maturing, but had reminders, like her mother’s hair, that would ease her stress and remind her it was…

One of the reasons not to read the book is its confusing storyline, the book is written in reverse chronological order at the start of the book, the four girls are grown women; some married, some divorced, some have kids, etc. They keep getting younger throughout the book so that at the end they were kids back in their homeland, the Dominican Republic. The author did this to make the reader experience the book as an immigrant; always going…

A beautiful, captivating, and revolutionary story, In the Time of the Butterflies, was written by Julia Alvarez and is a true account about struggle, courage, and love between four sisters, their families, and the people they encountered in their lives. I believe the central theme is to push back for what is right, even if it's hard or you stand only, in this case they stand as a family. The family has to deal with entrapment in the Dictatorship in the Dominican Republic throughout the entire story, this family helps change the entire nation's feelings, from entrapment to open minded. This captivating story is so easy to relate to, as it’s presented things every person has to go through in life, problems. What comes…

I think this specific experience is important to the author because it is when she first realized that every year on her birthday she is one year older, but she still acts like every age she passed through. She thinks she is older, but mentally she is still that little kid she was before. It says, “I don't know why but all of a sudden I'm feeling sick inside, like the part of me that's three wants come out of my eyes, only I squeeze them shut tight and bite down on my teeth really hard and try to remember today when I am eleven, eleven”( Cisneros 1). This shows that she is trying not to cry because she thinks that she cannot act like a little kid anymore who cries for everything. The lesson that she learned was that even though she is older, she doesn’t have to grow older mentally. I think she is facing an external and internal…

The mysterious Lisbon girls’ suicides is told to us by an anonymous boy that represents the group of boys that have loved, revered and wondered at the Lisbon girls and were the last to see them alive. In the scene wherein they get a hold of Cecilia’s diary, the director establishes just how much of a mystery these girls are to the boys. We are never given a clear picture as to the girls’ white-picket-fence suburban lives and the things that might have lead to Cecilia’s suicide; only rumors and gossip offered by neighbors, narrated by the boys; that’s why the diary serves as both a vehicle for the advancement of the plot and an important medium to communicate to us the Lisbon girls’ thoughts and feelings in a distant yet very personal way. The boys wanted to know what could have triggered the death of one them, and in knowing more about them, they come to fall in love with the elusive Lisbon girls. Even the diary prop, innocent in the way that it was made--with the stickers of rainbows, drawings of flowers, written in beautiful cursive--contained incredibly sad anecdotes about Cecilia and the girls. It was almost a foreshadowing of the things to come; how the innocent, angelic girls could commit suicide for no readily apparent reason.…

The first story of the novel is Bella’s story. Although Maxim Maximych is not the most descriptive narrator of the novel and despite the fact that he is quite naïve as to the true nature of Pechorin his narrative of Bella’s and Pechorin’s interactions are informative of his character. Pechorin’s dissatisfaction with life is what leads him in search for love. Although Bella is not his first encounter with romance it is the first Lermontov wishes to share. Bella’s story is important because we quickly learn that deep sincere love is not enough to bring meaning and satisfaction to Pechorin’s life. Bella loves Pechorin genuinely, but he is unable to reciprocate that love. Lermontov displays how Pechorin’s superfluous nature leaves him bored and dissatisfied with Bella’s tender and sincere love. He admits he is “still in love with her”, and that he “would give his life for her” but she bores him (35).…

To reflect on something is to understand it and I cannot truly say that I completely understand this book. I have seen death before and a lot of people I care about have died yet I cannot understand. Death is not always around me as it is with the people in this book. I never raised a family was I was ten years old like Tigist was forced to. At ten years old the worst thing that happened to me was my parents got divorced. When Tigist was ten years old her mother, father, and stepfather had all died. I cannot begin to understand any of that. I can read the book but I cannot understand it. I cannot imagine it either. Little children being left in the world with no parents or anyone to help them. To think I get nervous and barely survive when my mother goes away for a weekend. I cannot understand that world.…

She tells him ‘I’ll wait’ and for him to ‘come back to me’. She spends her whole life waiting for him only for them both to be killed in the war. We identify with her as the reader wanted them together and for Cecilia to get her happy ending. Ian McEwan’s purpose was to make us feel sorry for her and be sympathetic to her situation. The first reason I liked this story is because of its futuristic setting. The story is set in Venus in a jungle where all it does is rain. Once every seven years there is two hours of sun. The concept of having only two hours of rain every seven years is fascinating. It is fascinating because we take the sun for granted, and the people of Venus cherish it and yearn for the sun to come out. The sun to them is something unknown, something to look forward to, for people on Earth it is just light. Another interesting thing about the setting is that it only rains. Where Margot lives there is only rain, but it is not a light drizzle it is a downpour every day and every night. The rain is a symbol for despair. The rain is what keeps all of the kids’ spirits so low. If there were sun everyday on Venus, every kid would be living a happy jubilant life.…

The feeling of depression brings a lot of people down and can affect some of your daily life and decisions that you make. And the stories that was read throughout the selection or found to have a very depressing tone throughout the stories. The author connected his life towards the stories by making references to how he can't be who he wants to be and how his dad lock them away. In his background information you could read that his father did not want him to be a writer and how he had to confine himself to his father's likings.
