As the book opens, we see how thoroughly unprotected Celie is by any adults in her life. Her Pa repeatedly rapes her and Celie gives birth to two children by him. Her mama is sick and mentally ill, dying young. Though Celie’s teacher initially comes out to fight for Celie’s right to continue school, she goes away when she sees Celie is pregnant. It’s not clear to anybody whether it’s better for Celie to stay at her house with Pa or to marry Mr.__ when he comes by looking for a wife to take care of his young children. As we see, children are repeatedly abused whether it is physically, mentally or sexually. More time than nought it is mostly in poorer communities, poorer families or single parents. Women finding relationships with other men, and bringing them into the homes, as a means of financial support. These men in turn, are using this to their advantage and thus molesting the innocent child.
In the story Celie’s mother got remarried, and this is when the abuse started.
On a personal note: I was the second of four girls at the time. I remember being ten years old and my mom met this guy. He seemed awfully nice at first bringing us treats each time he would come by to visit my mom. As the years went by he finally started sleeping by our house, and this is when it started. First the touching started with my eldest sister, and this was told to our mom, and like most mothers do, she did not believe my sister. Then the touching started with me as well, this happened when everyone was asleep, it even went as far as him rubbing up against me when I. I awoke startled and then he ran outside. I then confronted my mom about this, she then proceeded to ask him and of course he denied the accusations, saying that I don’t like him and that I wanted him to move.
I then proceed to tell her, unlike Celie who did not have a voice. He touched my sister and then me, are you going to wait until he did it to my younger sister, or get one of us
