Chapter 1- Introduction to cells 1. All living things are able to live, grow, and reproduce 2. Cells are formed parts of an organism and carry out all of its functions in living things 3. CELL THEORY- a. All living things are composed of cells b. Cells are the basic units of structure and function of living things c. All cells are produced from other cells 4. Microscopes focus light through lenses to produce a magnified image and other microscope use beams of electrons 5. Parts of cells work together- each kind of cell structures has a different functions within a cell 6. In multi- cellular organisms cells are organized into tissues organ system 7. Cell organelles: d. Cell wall – rigid layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms e. Cell membrane- controls which substances pass in and out of a cell f. Nucleus- acts as a cells control center, directing all of the cells activities g. Ribosomes- produce proteins h. Cytoplasm- fill between cell membrane and nucleus i. Mitochondria- convert energy stored in food to energy the cell can use to live and function j. Endoplasmic reticulum- (ER) in an organelle w/ a network of membranes that produces many substances k. Golgi apparatus- receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the ER, packages them and distributes them to other parts of the cell l. Vacuoles stores water food and materials m. Lysosomes- saclike, brakes down large food particles into smaller ones
