The reasons may be to save face or not wanting to hurt the feeling of others. In their mind, the reasons established justify the deception. On the other hand, deception can pressure someone to act against their will. Sisela Bok states “The knowledge of this coercive element in deception, and of our vulnerability to it, underlies our sense of the centrality of truthfulness.” Knowing the fact that deception can persuade one do act against their will, makes it important to be truthful. The purpose of these studies was to test dishonesty escalation. All experiments were done with two people and the task was to estimate the amount of pennies in the jar; the more they estimate the more money they will receive. This experiment had four possible results, the first possible result is self-serving-other-harming which means lying about the amount of money in the jar would benefit the participant and harm his partner. The second one is a self-serving-other-serving, by being dishonest about the amount of money in the jar both individuals would benefit.
