Cerberus' name came from the Ancient Greek word Kerberos, which means 'spotted.'
He was often portrayed with three heads, symbolising the past, present and future, or new birth, growth and old age. He had a serpent for a tail, the claws of a lion and the heads of snakes grew from his back. Some people said he had one or two heads, and a small amount said he had a large number like fifty.
