Joe Louis, known as “Brown Bomber”, was a hero of his people by defending his own lightweight boxing title against a white
contender. Before the match begins, many black folks went the store to hear on the radio about the boxing match. The place was packed and Uncle Willie turns up the radio so even the youngsters wouldn’t miss a word from the porch. This event was very important to the people because you would barely see a black male fighting a white male at that time period and was the most anticipated event at that moment in time in the U.S. As the fight begins and progressed, the spokesman said what was happening in the fight like “a right jab to the head,” and this made the audience more scared if he will lose or not. He was down and had to get back out near the end of the fight and the black community didn’t know if he would get up in time or not. People shouted “get up” and “no” when the referee eventually reached 10 counts. The referee finally announced Joe as the winner and to many people, that was a surprise. Everyone celebrated and this gave hope to many black folks listening to the fight.
Hope brought the Black Community together and made them more happy that a black man has beaten a white man in a boxing match and proved that they are as equal as whites. Even though racial discrimination affected most of the black people during the early 1900’s, Joe winning the boxing match gave enormous amounts of hope to the people in the store as seen as they celebrated for an hour before leaving. Therefore, hope can help people like the black community in a time of suffering.
