I worked in a catholic hospital in Techiman, Ghana, public health nurse for our community followed the number of “bad” abortions in our municipality of 100,000. Abortion is illegal in Ghana, except for special circumstances rape, fetal anomalies, risk of the mother Abortions in Ghana). This is a fairly liberal abortion law in Africa, our municipality would record over a 100 botched abortion per quarter. Personally, I was surprised by the numbers, reality hit, woman will do whatever it takes, even risking their own lives. I was fortunate to work in a clinic that has connections, both politically and socially to the doctors and medical staff who sacrifices their lives to support woman in the right to choose. A documentary sheds light on the difficulties and fears these individuals have to offer safe services called “After Tiller”. It is about George Tiller, a physician in Colorado who was shot and murdered during church services because he performed abortions. What stood out for me was how the nurses react and support the patients who come to them because many of these woman have no one or where to turn. These experiences have formed my personal belief that nurses do societal justice, by just being in the profession. It only takes one person to actually listen so you can make a choice that works for you
