Changing My Last Name
Birthmarks go far beyond an irregularity of the skin. These are those in one's life that define how a person is seen by society since the day he or she was born. Starting by skin color and followed by the reputation and capital owned by that individual's family, society defines a person by what is exposed for them to see. There are some of these marks that no matter how hard one tries, are impossible to change; last names being one of them. Quite few people care about what their last name really means. Last names are most commonly accepted and owned as they are, without the necessity of changing them, and seen as those who have been simply passed down by generations. It doesn’t go far beyond that… for most people. This was my case until the day I got interrogated at the airport when an …show more content…
How many uncomfortable situations would I avoid by changing it, or scraping it off of my life once and for all. I guess it would make a substantial 180 degree turn in my life, but I would rather get interrogated a thousand times than change my last name. Aside from being something I was immediately born with, it is one of the few things that define me as an individual. Though not many look at it my way, I proudly hold on to it due to the enormous significance it holds. This word is a synonym for family and unity, which is the foundation of everything around me. With this, being content is the most important aspect a person has to focus on. Personally, my family brings joyfulness into my heart and is the one that can push me away from darkness. They are the building blocks who have helped me grow and stood by me since I was first born. Metaphorically speaking, my last name is the honorable representation of who I am as a person and the relationship I have with the people around me. So, why would I give up something so precious for the avoidance of something so

With this I connect to the change that happened for the aristocrats in the 16th century. Names became as important as who one was birthed by. Suddenly one could marry into a powerful and mighty family name. With this I’m sure that the lower class questioned this system, as however not everyone could marry rich.…

I’m not that fond of my last name, however, I always receive compliments on it. I will agree it’s pretty neat, though. It’s the Swiss German (Switzerland and Germany) variant of Zumbro (Mooseroots). No one can spell it correctly, even though it’s clearly spelled how it sounds. I am part German and I actually speak a minimal amount, so I’m proud of the fact my last name represents that, but I’ve never met one human that has said it right on the first…

I am not completely familiar with my family history and immigration story but I do know the story of my last name. I know that when Greeks immigrated to America, their surnames were changed due to a physical marking or characteristic. My last name, Mountzouris, basically means “smudge” or “patch of dirt” because one of my ancestors came to America with a smudge of dirt on their face. This then made me think of how my ancestors were treated along with other in the Greek community based on the idea of how they were renamed. Since they had a different language and cultural background, people categorized them to be in the “Greek race” due to the “nonlinear cultural movement of immigration” (Jacobson…

As a Medical Officer of the US Air Force, one is expected to be professional and ethical enough to make decisions that positively impact on his or her department to the extent that he/she can be accountable for actions or consequences that arise as a result of their decisions or choices. In the true essence of the word, accountability comes in where an individual is under the obligation to justify their choice of actions to an interested party, in this case the US Air Force. As a medical professional within the air force, one is free to choose but never free from the consequences of his or her choice.…

Everyone is born with a title, a way to identify yourself, and your own logo, a name is given by your parents, something that is a part of you and a part of your family and culture. You cannot control what you were named, it was not something you could’ve chose, so why should you discriminated for that. We all know discrimination in the workplace is common, we built ways to avoid it and prevent people from ostracizing others due to ethnicity or sex. Do you know who your biological father is? Do you know what your heritage is? I do, but some children do not because they were left for adoption for some reason or another. Do not misunderstand me, adoption is a great thing, and there are plenty of children without parents right now waiting to be adopted. I have the distinction of knowing who my father is. He and I have the same last name. My heritage starts and ends with my father. This is where my troubles begin, my father was a war baby and the morals and values of society at that time did not allow for such transgressions. My biological grandmother on my father’s side had an affair while her husband was off fighting in World War II. My father was put up for adoption through a church and adopted by a family with the original last name of Shell. In her essay, Kadaba talks about how names were changed or Americanized so to speak. For example, she talks about how Christopher Annas changed his last name, due to embarrassing mispronunciation in English, Lini S. Kadaba, “What’s in a Name?” (pg 175). My heritage is already forever changed by my last name as Milton had changed his name from Shell to Schell.…

    My Name

My name comes from a small tribe in Nigeria. It means alert is the language. My father was born in Africa where the name is heard more frequently. My mother travelled out there with my dad and picked a name for their child. There were many names to choose from, so they picked the one that everyone will mispronounce when they get back into the states. Over the years I acquired many different nicknames one of which I am still using. Some of my favorites have to be Vesh or V. There are many that I dislike though such as Veshy, Vegetable, VuVu, or Vagina. Saying my name isn't one of the easiest words on the planet. People always get a look before there about to say my name for the first time; I always know when I'm up. They always say something like, "I'm sorry if I'm going to mispronounce this, but is it Vershima?" With a name like this you have to be open to a lot of correcting. I feel like my name is very unique and that I am one in a million people to have in the Untied States. My name has always been very long for me to write. I have never enjoyed writing the whole thing out on paper. My name has gotten me into very different situations. I have received various letters from organizations such as, Miss America pageant, women's soccer, and also a free tampon in the mail. I think my name can also be a ghetto black girls name if it wanted to be. When I say it not that much comes to mind except that I could be getting in trouble cause only my mom or dad call me by my whole name. Influence with my name made me get a nick name because it is so hard for people to pronounce. Every time I have to correct someone and you always get tired of that situation. My name is very unique, especially with my unique personality. I would never change it because then that wouldn't be me. In some odd case that my name must be forbidden to say, I would change it to Daniel, which is my middle name. The children I have will probably not have as extravagant names as me.…

Presently, a person may change their name to reflect their gender identity by filing a petition in court; “Most judges will grant a name change as long as they are convinced that the petitioner is not trying to evade debts or the police,” (“Transgender People and the Law”). In 1966, In the case of Mtr. of Anonymous v. Weiner, 50 Misc., a transgender person from New York - who remained anonymous - wished to change their name and sex on their birth certificate after undergoing sex-reassignment surgery. The New York City Health Department declined this request. The court later ruled that “the New York City and New Jersey Health Code only permitted a change of sex on the birth certificate if an error was made recording it at birth,” (“History of Transgenderism”). Therefore, the transgender individual lost this case, unable to change the information on the birth certificate. Also, according to this source, this case was the first case in the United States to consider the concept of transgender. Clearly, transgender individuals have faced adversity in attempting to legally change their information on identification forms. Luckily, this challenge is not faced nearly as much in 2015, although many states require “proof of surgical treatment to change one’s sex, (“Transgender People and the…

The Birthmark was written in 1843. There were stories like Frankenstein and Rappaccini's daughter, which all had to do with some sort of science. Science can try an alter objects, but sometimes this could have been against the law. There are certain things that cannot be done with science, yet people still try. Making things perfect does not make the person perfect. Just because looks have been changed does not mean that the attitude or the quality of life for that person is any better. People will try and make different herbs and drink mixes to make them look and feel better. This is like what Aylmer did to Georgiana. Altering a flower to where it would make the birthmark fall off but whenever Georgiana touched it the flower died. “But Georgiana had no sooner touched the flower than the whole plant suffered a blight, its leaves turning coal-black as if by the agency of fire.” This is because Aylmer tried to alter nature. The flower had to many chemicals in it to live. Much like humans if they are pumped full of chemicals they will not live very long either. That is just another reason that humans do not need to mess with…
