The Birthmark Essay On Science And Nature
Science and Nature have always been something people have fought over. The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne was just that. Georgiana being imperfect drove Aylmer mad trying to make her perfect. “The story is gripping and obvious in its portrayal of a foolish man’s maddening attempt to scientifically control and perfect nature only to destroy the human potential and joy of his conjugal life.” (citation) Although science can make things better, scientist will never be able to make things absolutely perfect. Nature makes things the way they are for a reason. Science cannot overcome nature. Nature is too strong for it to be taken over, yes one can make changes to their body or certain objects. Even if with science one can try and make something perfect but it will not …show more content…
The Birthmark was written in 1843. There were stories like Frankenstein and Rappaccini's daughter, which all had to do with some sort of science. Science can try an alter objects, but sometimes this could have been against the law. There are certain things that cannot be done with science, yet people still try. Making things perfect does not make the person perfect. Just because looks have been changed does not mean that the attitude or the quality of life for that person is any better. People will try and make different herbs and drink mixes to make them look and feel better. This is like what Aylmer did to Georgiana. Altering a flower to where it would make the birthmark fall off but whenever Georgiana touched it the flower died. “But Georgiana had no sooner touched the flower than the whole plant suffered a blight, its leaves turning coal-black as if by the agency of fire.” This is because Aylmer tried to alter nature. The flower had to many chemicals in it to live. Much like humans if they are pumped full of chemicals they will not live very long either. That is just another reason that humans do not need to mess with

In "The Birth-Mark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author floods the story with many forms of symbolism to show there is no true form of perfection on earth. Although trying to accomplish such a thing, Aylmer not only highlights his failures as a scientist, but also kills his beautiful wife. After many nights of gazing upon his wife's porcelain face, slaying her heart with his disgusted looks, Aylmer convinces his wife Georgiana to let him conduct an experiment on the hand-shaped, rosy birthmark she flaunted upon her cheek, to remove such flaw and achieve pure perfection on earth. Within Aylmer's laboratory exists two contrasting rooms that display not only the workplace for the grungy men, but the heavenly boudoir of which his wife so pleasently…

It is impossible to deny that human imperfection exists. Today’s society has a tendency to be obsessed with the idea of physical perfection. Nowadays if our appearance isn't how we'd like it to be, there's plastic surgery. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote “The Birthmark” in 1843 about more than a century ago. In this short narrative the author is trying to show us it is wrong to attempt changing nature with science. The message is that being imperfect is being human. Georgiana and Alymer demonstrated their obsession with physical perfection much like we would today. In the story the wife, Georgiana, was perfect in every way except one; she had a mark on her left cheek. Georgiana was born with a crimson birthmark in the shape of a hand. The birthmark…

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birth Mark” is very heavy on science. The main character, Aylmer, is a scientist; the first line of the story is, “In the latter part of the last century, there lived a man of science,” (14). There is no clear delineation between magic and science though, creating a very eerie and superstitious mood as the story progresses and Aylmer falls deeper into his obsession over Georgiana’s birthmark. The text says he was “confident in his science, and felt he could draw a magic circle round her within no evil might intrude” (20). The word science is used to describe illusion, evil, magic, as well as the physical manipulation of another person through surgery or alchemy. Aylmer creates illusions that make him seem like he “held sway over the spiritual world,“ and it’s said that those illusions are…

In the preparation to reanimate life Frankenstein had to search for body parts which add a gruesome aspect to the story. Frankenstein’s world is “ruined” by the Monster. The Monster creates a gloomy atmosphere by threatening Victor as well as murdering people just to hurt Victor. In a classic Gothic novel there is a bridge between the mortal world and the supernatural world. This bridge in “Frankenstein” is the creation of a meta-human that which boasts supernatural speed, strength, and dangerous characteristics as well as a remarkably hideous appearance. In “Birthmark” the supernatural bridge is that of Aylmer’s potions which intend to “cure” people of afflictions such as his wife’s birthmark. Both stories are set in a past era where alchemy had been thought of as a possible successful science. “Frankenstein” has a setting that which can easily be determined as a setting for a typical gothic novel. The novel is riddled with thunderstorms and the cold snow. The majority of the setting in “Frankenstein” remains gloomy as if the sun never appears once. It’s as if Frankenstein’s creation of his Monster stole the whole books happiness. The “Birthmark” has a brief setting that of which is a dirty laboratory but the tragic ending of when Georgiana dies completes the “Birthmark’s” transition into a Gothic…

In his dream he kept cutting deeper and deeper but it would not go away. The dream Aylmer had is very symbolic to the story. In the dream Aylmer, "attempting an operation for the removal of the birth- mark; but the deeper went the knife, the deeper sank the hand, until at length its tiny grasp appeared to have caught hold of Georgiana’s heart" (Hawthorne 306). The birthmark made Georgiana who she was and it was a part of her deep down that could not be disfigured. The birthmark in a way is what kept her alive. The dream symbolizes ultimate reality and the nature of her birthmark. If Aylmer would of let go of the idea to remove the birthmark the ending could of been different. Since he is a static and stock character his determination to remove it only became stronger. He refused to accept that the birthmark was meant to stay on his wife's face. He truly believed in himself that he could obtain perfection when it came to his wife. The dream Aylmer had symbolizes the reality of the situation and that no matter what he does or how highly educated he cannot change nature. Nature is beautiful yet full of natural disaster and many unpleasant things because it is not meant to be perfect. Throughout the whole story Aylmer has a constant struggle with himself and…

‘creating and manipulating life in the laboratory is the gateway to a Brave New World, not only in fiction but also in fact’” (Morgan/Shanahan/Welsh 131). Because of “tampering with nature,” natural law is therefore unreliable and holds no ground in debate. Some may think this as good and that it indicates real stability because of the impossible becoming possible through enlightenment and the elimination of natural law. Be that as it may, as stated previously, stability is only a mere illusion presented through pharmaceuticals and the pursuit…

The birthmark is deeply ingrained in her face. “It was the fatal flaw of humanity which Nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on all her productions, either to imply that they are temporary and finite, or that their perfection must be wrought by toil and pain” (Hawthorne 211). We can assume that, symbolically, this passage implies that man 's imperfections are deeply embedded in his nature. “The Birthmark" illustrates the flaws of mankind, but its most significant declaration is that to be human is inevitably to be flawed. To struggle for perfection is to deny human 's own nature, to deny what makes us human, and to achieve such perfection is essentially impossible. It becomes clear when the narrator of the story describes Georgiana’s death “The fatal hand had grappled with the mystery of life, and was the bond by which an angelic spirit kept itself in union with a mortal frame. As the last crimson tint of the birthmark--that sole token of human imperfection--faded from her cheek, the parting breath of the now perfect woman passed into the atmosphere, and her soul, lingering a moment near her husband, took its heavenward flight” (Hawthorne 222), by eliminating Georgiana’s imperfection, Aylmer also liberates her of her humanity. Once she is perfect, once she is no longer flawed, Georgiana can no longer live. Hawthorne’s message is that being imperfect is just…

Scientists often do not see the consequences which may occur by playing God. The medical practices of today's society as come a long way sine 1987, but as one develops more knowledge the more experimental one becomes. What people don't seem to understand is that it is the actions which causes the consequences whether it's good or bad and an example of this can be seen in the film Frankenstein. The fact of humans disrupting God's ability to satisfy their own needs is unbiblical. People are taking too much advantage of what science has provided. It is not that people should not use science as an advantage, but to be cautious of the actions that are made and the consequences that are soon to be.…
