THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
Nikola Tesla, Sir Albert Einstein, former Republic of the Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos, and Dr. Jose Rizal, they all have one thing in common – a nanay-teacher. The nanay-teacher was a house bill (HB No. 5243) first introduced by Hon. Sherwin Gatchalian, a Congressman in Valenzuela City. This act was intended to strengthen the role of parents as partners of the government in educating children.
Most Filipino students have their mothers at home and most of them are their first tutors. Last September 30, 2014, the first Nanay-Teacher Parenting Camp was launched in Valenzuela City. The training session focused on how to properly teach and discipline their children through dialogues and workshops, in which parents can receive lectures, materials, and parenting modules. The local government was given a three-month period from September 15 to December 15 to conduct the parenting camp and according to reports, since the parenting camp was launched; it was proven to have positive effects on some of the public school students of Valenzuela City.
It was expected that by early 2015, all public school students in Valenzuela City will perform better after the implementation of the Nanay-Teacher Program. Hon. Gatchalian also encourages towns outside Valenzuela City to participate in the Nanay-Teacher Program to promote the roles of parents in educating young minds.
