The symbol I chose for The Scourge was the vine fruit tree. We see this tree all throughout the book. The first time we see it is on page1, it’s the whole reason why Ani’s adventure started. Then we see the tree again on page 107 being used as punishment for those who disobey. It symbolizes the good, the fruit, and the bad, the cage.
Summary In the beginning of Ani’s adventure she is just looking at a vine fruit tree to feed her family. Only when she decided to climb the tree to get the fruit two wardens walked by and spotted her. When she finally got down they immediately accused her of having the Scourge, a deadly disease. When they finally captured her her best friend tried and failed to rescue her. Then they were sent to be tested, but escaped again. …show more content…
Once Ani and weevil escaped Ani was caught once more, but with someone new.
That someone was Della, a rich town girl. When they both come back positive for the Scourge they are sent to the dock to wait for a boat to take them to the colony. Only then weevil comes running out to go to the colony with Ani. On the colony they only cause trouble One night when a vicious storm approaches Ani, weevi, Della, and Jonahis, Della’s friend, escape from the infirmary and the colony. After that they take over a Dulan ship. Dulan is a country next to where they live. After that they sail to a town where the Governor is make it a speech. There they expose the governor and her her awful plot for
power. After they expose her all the Scourge victims are free from the colony, and Ani, Weevil, Della and Jonahis get to go home.
Theme An important theme in The Scourge is loyalty, it’s all throughout the book. Weevil is loyal to Ani on page 88 when he went to the colony even though he thought he was going to die. Then we see it again when Della shows loyalty to Jonas. She doesn’t give up on him even though she knows he’s probably dead.
Setting For the setting I chose the colony on Attic Island. On page 101 she describes the island as foreboding, she goes on to say “that the old prison loomed even greater as we neared Attic Island”. (88) Later she says that when she walked into the prison “it felt like walking into a nightmare”. (159) The colony or Attic Island is important to the story because so much happened there. Ani thought she lost her best friend, but then finds out that there friendship can hold strong. It’s where Jonas and Della reunited and Ani figures out that the Scourge is just a deadly plot for power.
