Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science is book that gives the reader a view of what doctors experience while explaining the imperfections of the medical profession. The author, Atul Gawande, includes gripping accounts of true cases while exploring the power of medicine, offering a determined view from a hardly-seen point of view. Gawande begins the book with an introduction to medicine and the misconceptions associated with learning how to become a successful doctor. Many patients do not feel comfortable having interns operate as the main surgeon, yet Gawande notes that if interns do not learn hands on, then there will be no surgeons in the future. Emphasizing the point that practice makes perfect, Gawande includes his struggles and successes that occurred during his first year as a resident. He was failing to insert a central line correctly. After many failed attempts, he eventually picked up the process and flowed from there. Of course, being human there are bound to be mistakes. Gawande, after continuously doing central lines for years, still makes mistakes that end up hurting the patient. Due to his experience, negative outcomes rarely occur. Just like regular people they are faced with temptations and enticement. The downfall of good doctors and how this decline comes about is temptation. Doctors who are well-rounded and the most experienced are the most tempted to take short cuts to save time. The logic is that more time will result in more patients resulting in more money. The fame that comes from being a successful doctor is the clouded judgement; which can hurt many people in the end. Cutting corners and skipping steps to be more tie efficient takes away the aspect that these are real people on the
