Character analysis.
Ellie Linton- Tomorrow when the war began.

Ellie is the narrator and ‘voice’ of the Tomorrow series, the entire story is told through her eyes and from her point of view which is why thoughts on the other characters might not always be objective.

The main protagonist and narrator of the series. Ellie was born and raised on a cattle and sheep farm not far from the edge of the country town of Wirrawee. She is loyal to her friends, to her family; she loves the Australian bush and the life on the land. Ellie prides herself on being the strongest member (and therefore one of the leaders) of the group. Nevertheless, she is often scared and uncertain of her actions and tries to hide these, what she perceives to be, moments of weakness from her friends.
Ellie is brave but also scared, she’s a reluctant hero, and she puts a lot of weight on her shoulders and takes responsibility for everybody around her. It's clear that she loves her family and wants nothing more than to be reunited with them. It is also clear that Ellie has the deepest respect and strongest love for the Australian outback. Even when bullets are flying at her head, Ellie cannot help but marvel at the beauty of the Australian landscape. Through Ellie's narration, the reader fully understands John Marsden's own love for his home country, Australia
Every character of the Tomorrow series goes through a big transition and Ellie is not an exception. In the beginning they were all carefree and innocent but as soon as the war starts they’re forced to grow up quickly. Ellie becomes rational; she starts thinking like a soldier. And sometimes in the horrible reality of the war she’s forced to not feel, to breathe her own air, to forget relationships. Ellie doesn’t want to let anyone think that she’s weak; she likes to let everyone else think that she’s the strongest of the group.
Ellie is a great thinker, she’s never certain of how she’s going to react to a situation, she constantly

she reacts to the same situations. When she first went into hiding, she was over dramatic and she acted like everything in her life was a lie. For examples, when Daddy told Anne about the reason why they're in hiding, it was as she was a fish out of water. When the first bomb landed somewhere near the Secret Annex, it was like she was alreading writing out her will. She didn’t stop continuing her behavior until a few years, which was weird at first because at this point, I thought that she was going to stay over dramatic forever. She has shown positive progress with her temperament, which is the main reason why I believe that she’s a dynamic…

My second point is the Hermit. The Hermit is one of the side stories in the book they don't get that deep into the story but they give up just enough details to make a point out of it. The hermit in the book is considered to be evil by everyone in Wirrawee. But when Ellie discovers the Hermits den she finds old documents and photo's of his family. If he was so evil why would he keep them. Personally I think that he was putting his family out of their misery by shooting them, and he stayed away from everyone because he could not stand being judged.…

Her childhood was filled with memories such as "[camping] out often". In page 9 and 10 Ellie compares her life to her friend Fiona's saying; "unlike us rurals, she [lives] in town and spends more time playing piano then drenching sheep or marking lambs". Ellie is a genuine rural. Throughout the book Ellie also exhibits another element of Australian Identity, a fighting spirit. Ellie’s religion was such a big part of his personality and lifestyle. In the beginning of the book Moche asks him why he prayed and he replied by saying “ Why did I pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breath?”. He is comparing praying to breathing, it is something so effortless for him something he doesn’t think about. This supports my thesis because this shows how religious he is and how praying is something he does but doesn’t think about because it is something he feels he should do for god. Ellie also tried hard to learn more about his religion even at such a young age which really shows his devotion. He eventually tells Moche of his problem with finding someone to teach him about his religion Ellie said “ One evening I told him unhappy I was because I could not find someone to instruct me in the Zohar, the caballistic books, secrets of Jewish mysticism.” In this quote you can see that he really wants to study and learn more he is eager to learn more about god and his religion and this helps us understand how is personality changed so much. Elllie being so interested and devoted to his religion shows us that the things he experienced were so horrifying that it changed the way he thought about his religion which he was so devoted to and didn’t question.…

Ellie went through a lot during his time at the camp like getting in fights with other jewish inmates over stuff like food. Then there was how he was always thinking about his mother and sister. Despite suffering through a number of unfavourable events, it is her mother’s death that triggers her inability to feel: “I do not know what you are supposed to do with memories like these. It feels wrong to want to forget. Perhaps this is why we write these things down, so we can move on” (Jones 179); through writing about these events in chronological order, Matilda is able to begin the healing process of her mental wounds and continue to capitalize on her true identity. Ironically, it is following this barbarous event that Matilda comes to recognize the beauty in Bougainville Island: “All the lovely things in the world came into view—the gleaming sea, the sky, the trembling green palms” (Jones 148). It seems as if this loss had brought clarity to Matilda’s life as she begins to disconnect herself from the island she once referred to as “home”, and makes the immense expedition to Australia and England. This exemplifies the idea that in order for someone to rise, another individual must die. Matilda’s happiness and search for her inner identity is dependent upon Dolores and Mr. Watts giving up their utmost basic human right: life (Robbins, 2007). Although it is a tragic situation, this event highlights Matilda’s inner strength. Despite losing the will to live, she rides out the storm and turns to writing about the unfortunate event. As a result of these tragic circumstances, Matilda makes a name for herself as she analyzes and scrutinizes every detail of her life through means of writing whilst simultaneously keeping Mr. Watts’ and her mother’s memory alive. By doing so, Matilda is able to accomplish her dream of working in the education…
