In the novel What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges Gilbert Grape the son of Bonnie Grape and the late Albert Grape in Endora, Iowa and he works as a grocery clerk, he tends to be impulsive, immature, and enclosed to himself during the book. He goes through tough times in the house when he’s the man of the house and he has to take care of his Down syndrome brother Arnie. Gilbert is the kind of guy that bottles up all his emotions/thoughts, he’s impure in public and he is spontaneous when it comes to his family throughout the entire book.
Throughout the Book Gilbert is very bottled up. He has many things to say but he keeps it to himself like- his brother Arnie – he wants to call him a retard but he only says it to himself in his head. Also He has many comments that he wants to say to his mother but he knows it will not end well. Throughout the novel he tries and tries to keep them in but he finally breaks. In the story he meets a girl name Becky and she helps break him out of this bottle. She took him back to his old school that’s being closed and burnt down; so he can go to every classroom that has been in and write on the chalkboard of what bad happened in that classroom to get it all out. There was one classroom that he pasted but eventually went back to. It was the grade 2 class; he skipped it because he did not want to write down what happened in there. The thing that happened was in grade two he peed in his pants in front of the whole class, it was horrible for him. The only way he kept away from showing emotion, is when he drove his truck alone. Gilbert is very impure; he is always unclean and he was having the affair with Mrs. Carver, it
