One thing Ava overcame in the story is getting bullied. In the passage, it says, “The next morning I arrived at school 20 minutes early and did what I had to do. This is Mr. Hilton speaking. Would Mr. McCoy
and Jacob Stone please come to my office!” That shows the theme of overcoming obstacles because the whole story Ava was really scared to tell people about Jacob and Mr. McCoy bullying her. She couldn’t keep the secret anymore and she told her best friend Lindsey. Lindsey knew Ava had to tell someone and she helped her overcome her obstacle. Another thing it says in the passage is, “A young man stationed me on the first mat. It struck me then. I had won. I had come in first!.” It is important to notice that she had to overcome the obstacle of winning the race and overcome the obstacle of getting bullied at the same time. Ava was so mad at Jacob for making fun of her that she won the race and didn't even notice. She had a hard time dealing with kids, but she won the race overcoming her first obstacle. That’s how Ava overcame obstacles.
Thomas Edison overcame the obstacle of failing 10,000 times to create the light bulb. One of his favorites quotes were, “I have not failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” That shows the theme of overcoming obstacles because even though it must have been hard to keep going after failing so many times, Thomas Edison kept going and has one of the best inventions. In Thomas Edison early life he got an ear infection leaving him nearly deaf. But that didn’t stop him from doing anything. Another obstacle Thomas Edison had to overcome was that he didn’t do well in school. In an article it said, “Thomas Edison attended public school for 12 weeks. A hyperactive child, prone to distraction, he was deemed "difficult" by his teacher.” He did not let that obstacle stop him from becoming a great inventor and creating an amazing invention. Thomas Edison overcame obstacles just like Ava did.
