Character Analysis Essay In past times, many African tribes and regions have been colonized by European countries. England, France, Portugal, and Spain were all looking to spread their influences and find good to trade. At first the Africans were curious when they saw these white men because the only white person they had seen was Albinos. There were many different reactions to these foreigners. Some African welcomed them into their villages while other worried that they were dangerous. In Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart Okonkwo, a clansman of Umoufia, is one of the worried people. Forced into exile for seven years for killing a clansman by accident, Okonkwo moves to Mbanta, his mother’s homeland. After two years of exile, Okonkwo’s great friend Obierika pays him a visit. Obierika pays okonkwo money that he has made from selling okonkwo’s yams, the number one crop. As Okonkwo and Obierika catch up on old time, Obierika brings him bad news in chapter 15. “A white man went into Abame riding an iron horse (a bicycle)”. “An albino”, says Okonkwo. “This one was much more different than an albino” says Obierika. This shows that the only white people they knew at the time were albinos. The Oracle of Abame told them the white man would destroy their village. So, they killed him. The white man said nothing before they killed him. On Afo a market day of Abame, three white men and a very large number of other men surrounded the market and wiped out Abame. The survivors sought refuge in and told of this horrible massacre. When Okonkwo heard this, it was the fuel that lit the fire on his mission to destroy the white men. In Okonkwo’s motherland of Mbanta, they didn’t worry about the missionaries. They were on guard because they heard what happened to Abame. The missionaries in Mbanta seemed friendly at first.
