Character Analysis: Inside Out & Back Again '

Imagine being pushed into a solution that results you in leaving your home country? You are to suffer through the challenging transitions of immigrating. This is a very hard process to go through and requires finding a new place to settle. The character Ha in Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai, faced all of these while having to flee her home in Vietnam because of war. In another text called World of Difference Benefit Luncheon, a boy explains his struggles of fleeing his country and finding a new one. In Inside Out & Back Again, Ha flees her home in haste when the war comes closer to her home. Soon their president left them and couldn’t run their country anymore. On page 49, it says “ On TV President Thieu looked sad and yellow {...} I can no longer be your president, but I will never leave my people or our country”. This shows that for Ha and her country’s leader to leave, they have nobody to protect them, tell them what to do. When Ha leaves her country and travels to America her experience isn’t the most joyful. Ha is now being bullied at school because of her looks, her skin, and her culture. On pages 145 and 146 it says “A pink boy with white hair {...} pulls my arm hair. Laughter. {...} He pokes my cheek. Howls from everyone.”. This shows that the other American kids find humour in the way Ha looks. This experiences that Ha turned her life inside out, much like the title. But long after the bullying, the discrimination
