Throughout the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Robert Neville, the last human who is immune to this disease, is an anti-hero. For instance, towards the end of the story, during his state of confusion after he woke up, he felt pain that he had not ever felt before and thought that it must mean it was the end and said to himself ‘’I am going to die’’ (p.164). This statement shows that he accepts that his life will end here and he will not try to fight it in any way in order to continue surviving. In addition to this, after he realizes where he is and what happened, Ruth came to check on him and asks him why he did not leave beforehand like she told him to in the letter she left him. Robert explained to her ‘’I…couldn’t […] I almost…

Nick Enright the playwright of ‘A Property Of The Clan’ uses many techniques to portray the youths of Australia in his play. He uses swearing often to show the speech of the male gender in particular, and their attitudes towards the females. Although the programme is presumed by the audience to be a political and informative show and the language used on the show would be thought to be Standard English, Andrew Neil does not speak in this way but in a colloquial dialect with plenty of hedges and fillers for example ‘wouldn’t foster with a barge pole’. Since Andrew Neil has been interviewed, as editor of the Sunday Times and, on This Week, been interviewing for a long time, he shows experience by the way that the speed of his talking is constant and the way he transforms fillers into professional dialect. For example in the transcript there seems to be plenty of hedges and fillers in his speech but when listening to him you really need to listen carefully in order to pick them out. Also Andrew Neil and the interviewees…

Eddie McGuire strategically uses inclusive language throughout his piece to motivate the audience to agree with his view on decriminalizing drugs. The inclusive language suggests to the audience that they are all in danger from this issue; Eddie himself included making him come across as if they are on the same level which is often an appealing thought to most readers, persuading them to listen to his views and genuinely consider them. Eddie uses the input of ‘slang’ terms such as when he stated “$2 billion dollars may see some crims locked up” implying that the audience is past being formal with McGuire and is considered to be a ‘friend’ making him trustworthy and his opinion respectable. He then went on to appeal to patriotism by including the statement “And let’s stop kidding ourselves, Australians are among the biggest users of drugs in the world” His love for his country and reference of inclusive language expresses that he does in fact have things in common with the everyday people reading his article, creating the illusion that he and the audience are fighting the same problems and have the best intentions in mind. These factors add a level of respect to his opinion amongst the audience reading helping to…

Within the first sentence of the piece, which is the declarative statement “have never towel dried my arse in my entire life”, McIntyre uses taboo language. By using the term “arse” the social distance between himself and the audience is removed. The story seems to become instantly more relatable to those listening as he appears to be on the same social standing as them, since taboo language is widely used in everyday life. Furthermore, the use of “arse” adds to the comedic value of the utterance, as is often the case with the use of taboo language within comedy. But dropping the pronoun “I” at the beginning of the sentence McIntyre also successfully creates a relaxed atmosphere that the audience feel comfortable in, as the utterance seems more colloquial and as a consequence more relatable.…

The qualities of Dystopia apparent in 1984 and V for Vendetta through the absence of Independence and Freedom provide groundwork for the texts classification of a cautionary tale. 1984 gives way to the oppressed protagonist of Winston Smith who through his experiences provide insight to the dystopia present in the novel. By Winston expressing paranoia of the Thought Police even at the confines of his own home seen with; “The thought police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time.” Shows the abused Independence of citizens in this society. Bu the use of straightforward language shown in this quote the reflection of the grim society lived by Winston is expressed. Through the complete dominance of the media by the governmental forces with the’2 minutes of hate’ the dystopian methods used to eradicate the freedom of the individual. Frequent and shown to be largely successful, it is through this event the inner party is able to exploit the people by creating a figure of hatred and pronouncing themselves as liberators. The loss of freedom can be centred around the party’s portrayal of Goldstein, who takes on sheep-like qualities. “It resembled the face of a sheep, and the voice, too, had sheeplike quality.” Universally an inherently despicable form geared for hatred, Orwell uses Irony linking Goldstein’s features to…

Paddy McGuinness, the host of Take Me Out. As well as managing to make the show nonsensical in record time, he has accomplished in deriving a whole new meaning of the word ‘host’. Belting out clichés, McGuinness spends the majority of his time prancing around the stage, in a brash fashion. How many times can you reuse a phrase, until it you not only abolish any meaning from it, you also become the most excruciatingly annoying host TV has ever known? If a guy is needed for this job, Paddy is your man. The host’s most common phrases consist of, “Let the hanky see the pankey,” and “Let the hokey see the cokey,” and finally, the most absurd of them all, “No likey, no lighty.” Overtime, these phrases become irritating and if you combine this with the shows ludicrous atmosphere you might as well be standing there saying, “I am an attention seeker!” No doubt anyone who did this would go unnoticed.…
