In the allegorical novella, titled Animal Farm, by George Orwell, there is a farm of animals that are used to represent the Russian Revolution. The story tells the reader that there can never be a utopia, and that there will always be someone on top, which means that there will always be someone on the bottom. There are many memorable characters, but one that sticks out is Boxer. Without him the farm would have never lasted as long as it did. He is such a dependable character because he has an immense amount of strength, loyalty, and bravery.
Boxer has many characteristics, with one being his strength. For example, “Boxer was an enormous beast, nearly eighteen …show more content…
hands high, and as strong as any two ordinary horses put together”(2). This shows that he was the most sturdy of any of the animals on the farm with four legs. This also shows that since Boxer is such a powerfully sturdy beast, the farm might have never worked without all of his hard work. Boxer has shown and proven that he has the most stamina and commitment of any of the “four legs” and because of his strength in both work ethics and muscle, he helped Animal Farm succeed longer than it would have if he had not applied his strength and endurance.
Boxer is not just powerful, though, he was also incredibly loyal to those like Napoleon.
For instance, “Napoleon is always right”(39). This shows that Boxer is completely devoted to his loyalty to Napoleon. Not only does this make him an honorable character in this story, it also makes it easier for Napoleon to manipulate him due to him having so much loyalty towards him. This shows that Boxer has an immense amount of loyalty to Napoleon, which was his downfall.
In addition to the other descriptive words of Boxer, he also has a compassionate demeanor. In addition, Boxer says after he had knocked out a stable boy, but had thought he had killed him, “I have no wish to take life, not even human life.” (45). This shows that Boxer feels ignominious which shows his compassion.Although this shows that Boxer may be powerful, he does not wish to use it for malignity like implications upon others. Boxer is a compassionate horse who does not wish any harm upon any creature.
In conclusion, the story is about how there can never be a beatific utopia. The animals started a revolution, so they would no longer get abused, only to allow one of their own to become a dictator who abuse them all over again just like Farmer Jones. Boxer represents the working man in civilization because he is strong, loyal, and
compassionate.
