The novel Christy Miller by Robin Jones Gunn takes place in the summer of 1998 at Newport Beach, California. Christy, a thirteen-year-old girl, decides to devote her life and soul to God in which she discovers new friends and develop stronger relationships along her journey. Every summer, Christy leaves her hometown, Wisconsin and visits her aunt, Martha, a stubborn woman, and her uncle, Bob, an understanding and benevolent person at their beachfront home in Newport Beach, California. Christy is encouraged by her aunt to make new friends, so everyday, she goes out to the beach around noon where she meets Alissa, a seventeen-year-old model, who is going through a difficult time with her mom being an alcoholic and her dad who is in prison. Christy has a major crush on Todd and encounter challenges along the way with getting to know him better. Tracy, both Todd and Christy's best friend, always encourages Christy to have a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God, for she is worried that Christy doesn’t have the same connection with the Lord as she (Tracy) does. When her aunt and uncle invite Christy, Brittany, an anorexic, and Janelle, Christy’s best friends, to a weekend in Palm Springs, at midnight, Brittany persuades the girls to go with her to the drugstore in which she picks up her mother’s prescriptive diet pills and three boxes of laxatives. Brittany attempts to leave the store without paying. When confronted with a security guard, Brittany slips the items into Christy’s purse and runs out with Janelle, leaving Christy alone with the guard. The guard left Christy in an office and told her to stay, yet Christy didn’t attempt to move at all for she obeyed the officer and faced the possible consequences. Christy realized that God would always be with her whether or not it is in a difficult time or in a contented one, for he will never abandon her. After Rick Doyle, the school’s heartthrob, is attracted by Christy and without a warning, kisses her, Christy is confused of where her relationship stands with Rick and Todd, so she kindly refuses because she cares about both Todd’s and Rick’s feelings.
