One girl whose grades slipped when she was left to care for her two younger brothers. One girl with purple hair and black lipstick who hides her love for playing the piano from her friends. Jazz Luther is a rebellious, young teenage girl with black lipstick and purple hair. She comes from a rich family, plays piano, and has frequent disputes with her mother. In the book, Define “Normal”, by Julie Anne Peters, Jazz lives in a society where people are judged based on appearance, which she breaks through when her piano secret gets exposed. In the society in which Jazz lives, she is not taken serious due to the way she dresses. She lives in a society where appearance plays a large part in how someone is treated by their peers. People think she is a punk, someone who does not care, or is a troublemaker, but actually she makes good grades, and play piano. No one really realizes how much
In other words, she sees the looks teachers give her, and it inspires her to do better in her school work and prove to them that her image does not define her personality. Her mother tries to get her to act like the rich kid she is, but the more her mother tries, the more she rejects the idea and rebels. She wears black and dyes her hair unnatural colors to hide where she really comes from, a rich family. She also hides her love for playing piano because she does not want to be classified as a rich kid, but doing so gets classified as a punk or a goth. Antonia, the other main character, is classified as smart or a teacher’s pet, so a teacher’s pet and a punk; that is not usually the types that are best friends.
