Character Analysis of Elphaba in the Book, Wicked
Character Analysis Essay Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, wanted to create a twist of the Wizard of Oz, by focusing on the life of the Wicked Witch of the West, also known as Elphaba. In the book, the Wizard of Oz, she was seen as a wicked witch to the readers. In the book Wicked, Elphaba was misunderstood and treated poorly. She has changed throughout the book by the environment, her health, community and more. Many people may think of Elphaba as cruel, but she is a good person, because she can be helpful and caring. The following shows how Elphaba is helpful in her environment. Elphaba was born in Rush Margins, Wend Hardings (“‘You were born in Rush Margins in Wend Hardings, weren’t you!’ ”), but she was raised in Quadling Country (“Shell, Nessarose, and I lived…sloping around from Quadling settlement to settlement”). Some resources they have and used were glass and water. Frex made shoes with glass beads for Nessa and Elphaba became jealous (“she withdrew a shoe…with silver glass beads”…“ ‘They’re just gorgeous,’ said Elphaba thickly.”). Water was another important resource and it was also the reason she died (“she hurled the water at the witch. An instant sharp pain…the Wicked Witch of the West died”). One of her responsibilities was to help Dr. Dillamond with his work on Animals (“‘she’s working in the lab and library under our Doctor Dillamond’”…“She told him about Doctor Dillamond’s work…what the real differences were between animal and Animal tissue.). She was offering to help Doctor Dillamond and it shows that she is helpful. Health and social education were important, because Elphaba’s social health changed her in the end of the book. Elphaba understands problems, like the one with Animals, so she talks to the Wizard about it. She starts thinking about it (“‘He’s a man in power…When Doctor Dillamond has his proof, he’ll write to the Wizard and begin to lobby for change.’”) and then she makes her move by talking to the Wizard (“ ‘I have

One of the main themes in Wicked is the fight of good versus evil. Although Elphaba adapts the nickname, The Wicked Witch of the West, by the end of the book, it is revealed that she is not actually the wicked one. The Wizard of Oz, who is supposedly the face of goodness, is exposed to be the evil one. Boq says that:…

Analyze the Main CharacterThe main character named Elphaba, in the novel Wicked, raises the debate to whether evil is inherited genetically or developed by social injustice. Elphaba, having been born with a pale green skin tone and razor sharp teeth was automatically rejected by society at birth. As she grew older she developed a vast knowledge of the world around her which led her desire to be influential towards the greater good. Even though her intentions were genuinely efficacious she was labeled wicked due to the narrow views on eccentricity throughout society. This is the conflict in which Elphaba was to succumb in order to fulfill her desire to better the world.…

Leslie Edwards (Matthew Perry), a clumsy aristocrat, and the hilarious Bartholomew Hunt (Chris Farley) are competing against the famous Lewis & Clark to be the first to chart and make it across the United States to the Pacific Ocean. In the beginning of the film, Edwards has high hopes to head the first expedition to make it across the U.S., but while he has the want and the money, he is a sheltered man who knows nothing of the wilderness. To aid in his journey, he hires the services of a supposedly knowledgeable wilderness-man and tracker, Hunt, who, once they get underway, turns out to be less than advertised (too good to be true haha). Aided by a crew of various rugged frontiersmen, they are also joined by their group's version of Sacagawea, a young Indian woman by the name Shaquinna (incredible), who plays a big part in helping them find their way across the dangerous and unknown land ahead, as well as, eventually becoming Edwards' love interest.…

    Miss Gulch Metaphor

Because Dorothy’s last name is Gale, and there were obvious points in the storyline of the Wizard of Oz where characters seem to be “blown off course”, a reader can understand that her last name was a metaphor. In the story, Miss Gulch threatens to put Toto to sleep because Toto chased her cat. Because of this motive, Dorothy casts Miss Gulch as the Wicked Witch of the West. The metaphor is used in the movie to show that Miss Gulch had thrown Dorothy onto a different path in the odyssey.…

So far in East of Eden by John Steinbeck the story has actually resonated with me quite well, Adam and Charles are what I see as a split manifestation of who I feel I am right now. Adam is the helpless but passionate and vulnerable side of me, a loose cannon of emotion who tries to hand off the fuse to anyone willing to take it, but Charles reminds me of the impulsive and seemingly fragile side of me which actually becomes my strongest trait during times of anger or fear. I think they see it in each other too, that they have the power to destroy one another but they recognize for their sick mother they must stay civil. Given that I’ve said that Adam and Charles are a split of one personality who is to say that we don’t all have the power within…

In seventh grade, I was first introduced into the theatre world by a group of my eighth grade friends singing a song I had never heard before. I did not have the time to ask them what it was called, but they told me it was from a musical called Wicked; the song in question was called “What is This Feeling?”, though at the time, all I knew was that it was about some people hating each other; back then, I’d believed it to be a love song between the Wicked Witch of the West and some unnamed male lead. I did not know anything about the musical other than it was about the Wicked Witch of the West and how she was supposedly good. This, being a novel concept to me, seemed idiotic, and I rejected the notion of such a silly musical. Since then, I had heard from numerous people that this was a great musical, and by the time I came to Parkview in 2009, I’d grown to be fed up with all of this talk of witches and scarecrows and something about gravity. I gave in, decided to try and find the soundtrack on iTunes, but, as these things go, I forgot about it almost immediately.…

First, Atticus shows more responsibility than the other two fathers when it comes to caring for his kids. Not only is Atticus responsible for his children's well-being, but he is also responsible for the well-being of the whole community. Since Atticus’s wife is gone, he has the responsibility of raising both of his children on his own. In Night and Great Expectations both fathers had a mother figure to help them raise their children. Atticus has a much harder job because he alone has to teach his children the good morals they should possess. This statement is justified when Atticus says, ‘“Sometimes I think I'm a total failure as a parent, but I'm all they've got. Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I've tried to live so I…
