Can you imagine how you would feel if the responsibility of caring for someone was suddenly thrust upon you? This exact situation happened to two boys, Manolin and Jim Finch.
Manolin is a young boy who assisted a fisherman during the 1940’s in the book The Old Man and the Sea, which was written by Ernest Hemingway. He previously helped Santiago, who is an older fisherman, on his vessel but when Santiago no longer was catching fish, the boy’s parents forced him to switch boats. Manolin still spent time with Santiago and helped him. Santiago arrived home after fishing for four days straight with a large fish body that was devoured by vicious and massive sharks. He desired what was best for her even above his own needs. “Run, Scout! Run! Run!” (Lee 35) when Scout was in danger, Jem only thought of her. Jem behaved selflessly for Scout. Before even thinking about his own safely, he hollered for her to run and reach safety. Jem behaved selflessly for Scout. He defended her when someone tried to harm her. In the process he broke his arm and was knocked unconscious and almost killed while thanks to Jem’s bravery Scout barely had a scratch. Jem behaved selflessly for Scout. Jem could have been brutally murdered while easier for him to save himself since Scout was slower. However, Jem protected Scout and never let her be harmed. Jem also cared for Scout by comforting her. “Jem took me to his room and put me in bed beside him, try to go to sleep, he said, “it’ll be all over after tomorrow, maybe” (Lee 208). When scout was scared, Jem comforted her and even made himself less comfortable to ensure her happiness. The fact that Jem was willing to give his own life for Scout shows that he truly loved her. “Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13 Bible NIV). “Jem…seemed to function effectively, alone or in a group…no tutorial system devised by man could have stopped him from getting at books” (Lee 43). Jem was an excellent student. He was always ready to learn which is demonstrated by the good attitude he possessed toward his schoolwork. While most his age dreaded school, Jem relished and enjoyed school. He especially loved books and would diligently bury himself in a book for hours even during the summer. He also reached for the stars with his schoolwork. He aspired to be a lawyer like his father which was a challenging profession. Yet even though it would be difficult, Jem did his best to ensure that his goal was met. This showed that Jem was genuine in his quest for knowledge. He did not try at school simply because he was required to, but because he truly desired to learn more than anyone in the whole world. He was a diligent student and accomplished his responsibilities to the best of his ability. This demonstrated that Jem really wanted to learn. While what these two boys accomplished differs, they both nevertheless accomplished
