Character Analysis Of Walter In Sue Mann's The Long Journey
The short story by Sue Mann; "The Long Journey", has a main character named Walter. Walter is a bit of a complex character, but reveals characteristics about himself as the story goes on. Walter is a procrastinator, gets distracted easily, and is desperate.
One of the first characteristics that Walter reveals to us is that he is a procrastinator. He revels this as he recounts the events of his previous night.
"Three days ago I began to get worried about the story. I know I shouldn't procrastinate the way I do, but you know how it goes. When the assignment doesn’t have to be handed in for two or three weeks, or even a week, it seems like a long way off. I always excuse myself by saying that I work better under pressure, but for some reason

Walter can never focus on what he is doing.
"For three hours I browsed through my old magazines and read all the short stories in them, along with jokes, cartoons, and the eye-catching articles. From the beginning I could tell that it was going to be more or less a waste of time because the only magazines I had were Time and Sports Illustrated, which aren't exactly literary magazines. But I just kept reading and losing time" (293).
Although Walter started his task of looking for short stories in his magazines, he quickly got distracted because of all the other articles that did not pertain to what he was doing. Walter is too easily sidetracked by the littlest things. But, when he realizes that he is being sidetracked, he doesn't care, he just continues to allow himself to be distracted. Walter can't focus on one thing for extended periods of time either. He started off focused when he was reading his magazines, but as time went on, he found himself straying away from what he was supposed to be doing until he was completely off topic. Therefore, this was making him lose precious time and leaving him with even less time to complete his

Walter wouldn't be a good listener for several reasons. One reason is because Walter often daydreams he doesn’t know what his wife wants him to do. “He looks at his wife in the seat beside him with shocked astonishment, She seemed grossly familiar, like a strange woman who yelled at him in a crowd.” (Thurber) The quote above shows how well he doesn't listen. He never listens to his wife. You could also be talking to him and say something and it could trigger a daydream.…

Walter White is an underachieving high school chemistry teacher from New Mexico who is diagnosed with lung cancer. After the brutal diagnosis, he begins manufacturing crystal methamphetamine to provide for chemo and his family upon his death. In the ‘Pilot’, it is Walter’s 50th birthday, Skyler, Walter’s wife, makes him a plate of eggs topped by veggie bacon spelling out "50”. Shortly afterwards, Walter drops off Walter White Junior, Walter’s teenage son who was born with cerebral palsy, at the same local high school where he works as a chemistry teacher. Later that day, one of Walt's more disrespectful students, Chad, witnesses him working a second job at a car wash for additional income. Chad quickly takes a picture of Walter cleaning his car on his cell phone and states “Makes those tires shine, huh?”. Chad’s girlfriend who is on the phone with someone comments “Oh my God! You will not believe who’s cleaning Chad’s car”. Walter, who is clearly humiliated, continues to clean the wheel. In this situation Chad and his girlfriend were putting Walter under the stereotype that he was just a lame chemistry teacher who taught them about unnecessary science. As a result, when they saw him working another job that was more embarrassing, they were shocked. This caused Chad to take the picture of Walter and make those comments to him. If Chad and his girlfriend did not think he was just a boring chemistry teacher, they would not have been shocked to see him at the car wash. Subsequently, Walter comes home to a surprise birthday party and during the party Hank, Walter’s brother-in-law who is a DEA agent, invites Walter to accompany him at a drug…

Walter wants to escape because he is constantly haunted by the fact that he doesn't do anything right. When he daydreams an ideal life is created for himself where he becomes heroic and praised. In his fantasies, Walter made himself have important occupations, such as a doctor where “He adjusted a mask and drew on thin gloves” (348) then all of a sudden he heard, “Back it up Mac!” (348) and returned to the real world. The ellipses break the vivid pictures and brutally snapped Walter back to reality, taking the reader along with him out of the daydream. The protagonist loves spending every afternoon in the Museum of Vain Endeavours. She is the usual and only visitor who is interested in reading about the different Vain Endeavours and she is specifically looking for one kind, but she never mentions what she is looking for. This museum contains many volumes of historical failed attempts, which are also dated to the present, that are made by people who continue to recreate them. Since she’s the only visitor, she always attracts the attention of an attendant, Virginia, who is the only employee around who works at the museum. Virginia gives to her different catalogues of Vain Endeavours recorded by specific years. These Vain Endeavours are specifically grouped first by year, letters, and then by numbers. After she returns the catalogues to Virginia, she’d usually contemplate about what she read as well as listening to Virginia’s insight about the difference of each year’s history. She would always think to herself about how curious it is for people to repeat Vain Endeavours, which is the repetition of many failed attempts, and if it were to be written, it would take up too much space. Sometimes she would talk aloud about some stories of Vain Endeavours from the book to Virginia. An interesting fact that Virginia shares was that only a tiny percentage of all the Vain Endeavours that…
