Speak; a novel by Laurie Anderson is set in a small town in New York with a young teenager girl, Melinda, who starts her high school years as an outcast. Her ex-best friends all split up into different clans except her; she was just by herself along with new girl, Heather. Melinda hasn’t spoken much since the accident over the summer and leaves her silent throughout most freshman year. At home she doesn’t speak much either and kind of leaves her parents curious as to why she doesn’t talk anymore.
Melinda is having a hard time at school with teachers, friends, and IT. Her teachers try to push her to talk but she doesn’t budge. Her ex- best friends never try and talk to her to see what was wrong. Some of her peers hate her because of her calling the cops at the summer party. At the party they have so much fun until IT came along. Andy Evans (IT) a senior at her high school was there at the party. He pulled her to the side and asked if she wanted to dance. So they danced and drank, they played around and eventually kissed. She thought she found love. Melinda became partially drunk and Andy wanted to do something she didn’t. She didn’t know at first until he pushed her to the ground and got on top of her. Then IT happened, she was raped. When he finished, she felt lost insecure and needed help so she called the cops. Everyone started fleeing from the party including her best friends. They left her, they were angry at her for calling the cops.
