Character in Short Fiction
Characters: Phoenix Jackson from “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty and Mrs. Mallard from “ The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. Phoenix Jackson
Challenging Event
Characters Response
Passing wild animals in the woods.
Bravery and determination. She told them to turn and run away shoo and move away from her she was on a mission and nothing was going to stop her.
Meeting in the woods with the white hunter when Phoenix had fallen into a ditch. He threw racist slanders at her as well as calling her granny the whole time.
Humor and kindness. She did although trick him when a nickel fell out of his pocket into sending his dog out so she could bend down and pick it up.
The unkind words of the assistant at the doctor’s office treating her as a charity case before she even had a chance to open her mouth.
Humble, kind and courageous. She did not speak back to these words she just held her head high and went about her business with the Nurse.

Finding out that her husband was killed
Dramatic cries of sorrow, deception
For an hour while she is alone in her room thinking that her husband was dead and she was all alone.
Feelings of being free and renewed, joy and happiness. Her sudden heart problem seemed to exist and she found independence and life.
Seeing her husband standing in the doorway.
Dramatic surprise. She was so shocked that the acuteness of her heart troubles returning it killed her.
Many people are faced with challenges that would test our ethics and morals. In the face of these hurdles people tend to give the reaction that someone else would expect out of them. Two main characters of the short stories; “A Worn Path” and “The Story of an Hour,” the women were faced with decisions that they would have to make as
