The police in our society carry with them a deep sense of tradition and honor that stems from generations of serving and protecting the public. This pride can, at times, lead some police to believe that they are the last line of defense with the public they serve and any other entity that appears to be encroaching on that territory should be mistrusted. This attitude does not mix well with others attempting to perform the same job function such as private security. Thankfully this is not the consensus of all public police officers. Most public police understand that they require the assistance of the private sector and will welcome the help where it is offered. The public police also understand that that private security entities are often times the first to respond at many of the incidents that later involve the public police. It has been estimated that nearly 85 percent of the country’s critical infrastructure is protected by private security (Ohlhausen, 2004). When the private security firms handle such a large majority of the policing duties it is essential that the relationship between the private and public police forces relate well to one another and cooperate whenever possible.…

The methods and legal limitations vary by the agency toward completing these goals. Public police attain more authority toward making arrests and detaining possible suspects, but they are under control by the government and the laws. The guards are powerless in certain situations without requesting the public police at the scene to assist with arrests, questioning, and detaining an individual, but the government and the laws do not limit private security as much as public police. The differences make the agencies useful and essential for most situations. The public police can concentrate on other aspects of public protection without spreading the agency thin to protect retail properties, private communities, and public special events because of the use of private security. The two agencies complement each other and possess frustrations. Individuals in both agencies work well, and the agencies can complete a wider range of goals when working together. Both agencies possess a love and hate…

The police are ‘gatekeepers’ to the criminal justice system because they “introduce people into the system through their decisions whether or not to arrest a person involved in a criminal incident” (Mendias & Kehoe 2012). The role of police is to counteract crime through maintaining a public presence, effectively acting as a deterrent. The Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act 2002 is the governing legislation for police powers. In the reporting of the crime phase in the criminal justice system, police must decide whether or not to report the crime, they could issue an informal or formal caution. Police are the main initiators of a criminal investigation, their discretion is used when deciding what areas to police, the types of crimes to target and whether a reported crime warrants an investigation. Police also have the power to arrest a person if: it is believed the person…

To begin to better understand how policing operates today you must first understand the history. A better understanding of what happened in the past and allow you to understand how far the criminal justice systems has come and how far we still have to go. Our criminal justice system model dates back to the model of that of the Anglo-Saxon, under the rule of King Alfred the Great. During his time in reign he allotted certain areas to land owners and they were responsible for policing these territories. From that model of the next 800 years up until Sir Robert Peal, the system continuously grew. “The modern concept of police was born in 1829, when Sir Robert Peel brought forth legislation in the British Parliament setting out the terms of a police force which was to operate within the City of London. At the time, London was besieged by criminal elements and the…
