Of the whole article, Stimson dedicates one sentences to the benefits of marijuana. He states that it has some palliative effects (Stimson 106). This makes marijuana’s benefits seem unimportant. However, this same concept cannot be said of when Stimson writes about the benefits of alcohol. He dedicates a whole paragraph to it, and while doing so, illustrates alcohol as a perfect drug. Therefore, when comparing marijuana and alcohol, marijuana is perceived far worse than it actually is. An unbiased author presents information from all sides which is what Stimson fails to do. Yet, his stance on this issue is correct. Marijuana should not be legalized. Marijuana does contain some benefits to human body, but it carries far more negative effects. The legalization of marijuana would only exacerbate the current drug problem in the U.S. The government should keep fighting to try and stop the selling and using of marijuana. Furthermore, the legalization of marijuana would only give incentive to the Mexican cartel to keep up with the demand. Therefore, more and more drug would continue to be brought into the country, once again, fueling the country’s current drug problem.
