Panama is the country located at the southern end of the isthmus that separates North America and South America. Panama is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Colombia to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the south, and Costa Rica to the west. Panama is famous for the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is fifty mile long marine passage way. The canal is used for making trade from Colón on the Atlantic coast and Balboa to the Pacific coast. The country has a tropical climate which is very humid and has lots of rainfall during the months between April and December. The country has many low lands; actually 85% of panama is covered in low lands the other 15 percent is mountainous terrains. Panama has a population of 3.2 million mainly residing in its capital city panama. Panama extends from east to west 480 miles, 115 miles north to south. The area is 29,157 sq. miles. On November 3, 1903 the small country of panama with the help of the United States declared independence. ("Panama: Country Overview.")
Panama 's current president is Martin Torrijos and their form of government is constitutional democracy. Panama is famous for the Panama Canal which nearly one million ships have passed through. The government wants to make the Canal wider so larger ships may pass through; the only problem is that around nine thousand people will lose their homes and communities. The remodel would help the country politically and economically but many of the communities around the canal are not agreeing. In 1903 Theodore Roosevelt supported Panama and helped the country gain its independence from Columbia.
