In the beginning of the short story Charlie despises the smart white mouse Algernon. “The test made me feel worse than all the others because they did it over 10 times with different amazeds and Algernon won every time.” This shows that in the beginning of the short story Charlie did not like the white mouse because Algernon beat him in every test. Algernon made Charlie
feel even dumber than he felt before; Charlie was thinking wow even a mouse beat me. “I hate that mouse” Charlie expresses that he hates that mouse. The only reason Charlie hates the mouse is because he beats him every time. And Charlie wants to win because he doesn’t want the doctors to rethink using him.
After the operation Charlie’s feelings changed for Algernon. “They let me hold him for a minit. Hes not so bad. Hes soft like a cotton ball.” This is showing that Charlie is starting to get a grip for Algernon. Since Charlie beat Algernon he is rethinking his relationship with the white mouse. Charlie feels how soft Algernon is enjoying holding him. “He told me Algernon is so smart that everyday he has to solve a test to get his food.” He starts to feel empathetic for the mouse. Algernon has to pass a test to get food, and lately Charlie has been winning against the smart mouse. Since Charlie is winning and not Algernon, Algernon does not get his food. He compares this to how would Dr. Nemur like it to have to pass a test every time he wants to eat.
Algernon and Charlie’s relationship changes drastically throughout the story. Would you like to get the operation Charlie had? Time changes, people change, situations change. The only thing constant is change. This shows that there will always be change in your life no matter what. Make the best out of the change in your life.
