I find Sapphos’ poems to be far more complex than most modern love songs today. Nowadays, the majority of modern love songs are either commercialized, or sexualized in content. In a sense, I do feel that poetry is able to convey feelings in a sincere manner. However, at the same time, there are still some artists in specific genres that are able to have that same profound impact. It is a historical piece during a time in which a nude sculpture of a woman was unknown. In particular, I do not find this sculpture to be pleasing in a sensual perspective. Even though the sculpture is indeed a bit sensual, I find the sculpture to portray the charms of Aphrodite as a goddess of love and beauty. I do not find this sculpture to be explicit as Aphrodite is not illustrated in such a manner.
I do not think this sculpture compares to how woman are portrayed today in the media. In today’s advertisement and film, woman are often portrayed with thin bodies and often unhealthy appearances. In comparison, I find the sculpture of Aphrodite to depict someone who is healthy and with a normal body type. Further, I find this to differ from the over-sexualization of woman in today’s media, especially in games and films. In all, I think it is quite interesting how beauty standards have changed over history, and how the public view of the ideal body type has changed over
