Chem 107
HW 8 (16, 26, 32, 38)

16. Determine how much energy is released or required for the reaction shown. Is this reaction exothermic or endothermic? CO2 + 2 H2O → CH4 + 2 O2
This reaction is endothermic
26. Why can’t we digest fiber?
We cannot digest fiber because we lack the enzyme capable of breaking the sugar linkages in cellulose.
32. Why is unsaturated fat considered much healthier than saturated or trans fat?
Unsaturated fat provides benefits of fat in the diet without the risk of cardiovascular disease and increased LDL/HDL ratio.
38. For optimal heart health, should LDL be high or low? Should HDL be high or low?
LDL should be low because it is the bad cholesterol level and HDL should be high because it is the good cholesterol level.

Answer: one piece of interesting information I found in the introduction was that, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) has been shown to be the most predictive of atherogenic susceptibility6 and has been demonstrated to exhibit oxidative susceptibility, which then relates to pathogenic oxidative processes implicated in coronary atherosclerotic plaque progression and destabilization.(page 446)…

All chemical reactions are processed through energy exchanges. Chemical reactions either absorb energy or release energy into their surroundings. In thermodynamics, endothermic reactions absorb energy where exothermic reactions release energy. In this experiment, we will be observing the chemical reactions that occur when a specific liquid is combined with a specific solid. We will measure the temperature of the liquid before the solid is added. Then we will measure the temperature of the liquid after the solid is added. We, then, will record the results, graph the temperature changes if any, and draw a conclusion whether the reaction is endothermic or exothermic reaction.…

Bad fats are saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are mostly in meats, dairy products and tropical oils. Saturated fat raises both bad cholesterol and good cholesterol, while trans-fat only raises bad cholesterol. This makes trans fats technically worse than saturated fats. The better fats would be monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Monounsaturated will lower your cholesterol, and unlike polyunsaturated they do not lower your good cholesterol. Your best fats would be the omega-3s (fish oil). This fat has shown to protect people from sudden cardiac death (Schardt,2002).…

The functions of fiber in the body are very benefiting; fiber is an indigestible part of plant-based foods that has two functions. Soluble fiber forms a gel in your stomach that captures certain fats, including cholesterol, before it is absorbed by your body. Studies have shown that soluble fiber can reduce LDL levels, improving your lipids profile. Insoluble fiber helps you reduce caloric intake by providing bulk and slowing digestion. Because both types of fiber favorably alter digestion patterns, it is associated with decreased risk of heart and cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Its beneficial effects on obesity, a risk marker for high cholesterol, also make it an important part of a healthy lifestyle. However, Lipids are made up of fats and protein. The amount and types of lipids in your blood is tested through a blood test. There are three types of lipoproteins that your doctor looks at to determine your risk of serious disease. Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, carry and deposit cholesterol throughout your body. That is why LDL is known as the "bad cholesterol." High-density lipoproteins, or HDL, collect excess cholesterol and return it to your liver. That is why HDL is known as "good cholesterol." Very low-density lipoproteins, or VLDL, contain a type of fat known as triglycerides. VLDL increases the size of LDL cholesterol, so it is often used as a risk indicator of high cholesterol. Some of the food sources for dietary fiber would be whole grains, beans, fruits, vegetables and nuts and…

There are four types of fats. Although there are bad fats and better fats, they are necessary to support cell growth and give your body energy. The bad fats are saturated fats and trans fats which are more solid at room temperature like a stick of butter and trans fats are liquid such as vegetable oil. Theses fats raise bad cholesterol levels and clog arteries putting you at risk for heart disease. Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are the better fats that can lower bad cholesterol levels and are beneficial when consumed in moderation.…

Looking back at my Computer Analysis Project about my food intake, I found two major problems in my diet. The first problem is that I have high cholesterol. My intake of cholesterol is high. The DRI is < 300 mg and my intake is 357 mg. The percentage for my cholesterol is 118.9%. I didn’t expect that my cholesterol will be this high. Having high cholesterol can cause major health problems. It can cause you to have heart problems. There can be a blockage in the arteries. It is when the cholesterol blocks the blood going to the brain and heart. When there is to much fat and plague, it builds up on the walls of the arteries and becomes hardened. The arteries become narrowed down, causing the blood and oxygen to move slowly to the heart and to the brain. When the blood is reduced, you can have a…
