PURPOSE:
To identify chemical and physical change in matter.
PROCEDURE:

Finding out the physical and chemical change in matter. There was seven different substances that were being tested; Mossy Zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mn), Copper (Cu), Magnesium Oxide (MgO), Copper II Nitrate (Cu(NO3)2), Copper II Carbonate (CuCO3) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl). There were four test tubes set up for the experiment. Each substance was divided amongst the four test tubes. The first test tube was being observed at its natural state and then it was held over a Bunsen burner to a boil and observed when it was heated up. The second test tube, which already had the substance being tested, was then added with a little cold water. I recorded my observation in the chart below. Test tube two was then held over the flame and waited for a physical and chemical change. With a glass stirring rod the substance in test tube two was cooled off and mixed around and placed on a piece of red and blue litmus paper. I waited a minute to see if there was any change to the litmus paper and then recorded my results. Test tube three was mixed with the compound and Hydrochloric acid. Most of the substances that were being tested had a physical or chemical change with the HCI. Lastly, test tube four which contained a new piece of a substance was mixed with Sodium Hydrochloric Acid. After each compound the test tubes were cleaned thoroughly and set up for the next substance that was being tested. This was repeated seven times.

Eleven mystery test tubes labeled from K-1 to K-11 contained: 6M H2SO4, 6M NH3, 6M HCl, 6M NaOH, 1M NaCl, 1M Fe(NO3)3, 1M NiSO4, 1M AgNO3, 1M KSCN, 1M Ba(NO3)2, 1M Cu(NO3)2 respectively. The contents of the test tubes were determined by chemical experiments. Solution K-1 contained NiSO4 because when solution K-9, ammonia which was identified by its pungent odor, was added, an inky dark blue color was made. Iron (Fe (NO3)3) was determined to be in test tube K-2. KSCN was found in test tube K-11 since Fe (NO3)3 and KSCN makes a bloody color when mixed together. Flame tests were conducted in which K-8 burned green which identifies Cu(NO3)2, and the solution from test K-10 burned yellow orange which indicates NaCl. Solution from test tube K-5 turned red litmus paper to blue which indicates a strong base (NaOH). Solutions in test tubes K-4 and K-6 are both strong acids which turned blue litmus paper to blue. Silver nitrate (K-7) produces precipitate with both acids and Barium nitrate can only produce precipitate with H2SO4 and it remains clear in HCl, K-3 precipitated with K-4 but did nothing with K-6, which proves that K-4 is H2SO4 and K-6 is HCl.…

Procedure: In this lab we mixed many different substances to see if they formed a double replacement reaction. We also looked for precipitants that were formed from the mixing of the different substances. We used barium nitrate, potassium hydroxide, sodium sulfate, magnesium nitrate, aluminum sulfate, and iron (III) chloride in set one. In set two we used potassium chloride, sodium hydroxide, magnesium nitrate, barium chloride, sodium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate. For each set, we mixed two drops of one compound in five wells of a spot plate. We then added two drops of all the other substances to the compound. We repeated this procedure for set two. If a precipitant formed from any solution, we recorded the color on our data table. If no precipitant formed, we recorded NR. After mixing and recording all the compounds we rinsed to spot plate thoroughly with water.…

The test tube was washed, centrifuged and decanted three times. However, this time the decantate was placed into a crucible. After that the crucible was placed onto a clay triangle with the lid open. The crucible and lid was first heated on a cool flame but then changed to a hot flame after all the water was evaporated. When the crucible and lid was done being heated, it was placed on a heat mat with the lid completely covering the top of the crucible. The crucible and lid were then weighed and recorded after cooled to room…

Objectives Observe and classify several chemical and physical changes. Give evidence for the occurrence of a chemical reaction. Write a balanced equation for a chemical reaction. Identify a reaction as a combination, decomposition, replacement, or combustion reaction. Background Physical properties can be observed without changing the chemical composition of the substance. Common physical properties that can be measured without changing the chemical composition are melting point, boiling point, solubility and density. Taste and odor are usually considered to be physical properties although they depend on the physiology of the person making the observations. Physical changes do not cause a change…
