At the beginning of the lab, a micro test tube with and without glass wool was weighed on an analytical balance. A watch glass, crucible, and lid were also weighed. The masses of all the materials needed for the lab were recorded in the data tables of the laboratory notebook. An unknown vial was obtained from the teacher and set to zero on the balance. About 0.6 grams of the unknown was measured into the micro test tube. The analytical balance was set to zero again and then the test tube with the unknown was measured and recorded. 2 mL of dichloromethane was added to the test tube and then stirred for two minutes. The test tube was then centrifuged for 30 seconds making sure that another test tube equal in volume was placed across from it. A micro pipet removed the liquid above the solid after the test tube was done being centrifuged. The decantate was dispensed into the previously weighed watch glass. The previous steps were then repeated two more times. The watch glass with the decantate was placed to the back of the mini hood so the solvent could evaporate. After half of the solvent was evaporated, the watch glass was then moved to the drying oven. Once the solvent was completely evaporated and cooled, it was weighed and recorded. …show more content…
The test tube was washed, centrifuged and decanted three times. However, this time the decantate was placed into a crucible. After that the crucible was placed onto a clay triangle with the lid open. The crucible and lid was first heated on a cool flame but then changed to a hot flame after all the water was evaporated. When the crucible and lid was done being heated, it was placed on a heat mat with the lid completely covering the top of the crucible.     The purpose of the Density Lab was to determine the identity of four unknown solids and two unknown liquids by calculating their densities and comparing them to a density chart, taking into account error analysis and finally classifying the substances. In order to calculate this density, we first found the mass of the container that was to be holding the substances. We then found the volume of the substance, and lastly determined the mass of the container and substance. We subtracted (Container + Substance) – Container to find the mass of simply the substance. In order to distinguish density, we took the final mass divided by the volume, and identified the substances based on Density Charts we found online. Originally we hypothesized that we would be able to identify these substances based on the densities we calculated, yet this proved to be harder than it seemed, however our hypothesis was correct.
