When walking by a small child, the thought that he or she is being abused may be the last thought that goes through someones mind. Although, child abuse occurs a lot more often than most people believe. According to the National Child Abuse Statistics, “A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds.” (National Child Abuse Statistics 1) This issue is not only extremely important for our society to understand and begin to take action towards, but it could be considered a worldwide issue that is occurring right before our eyes. As fellow citizens of the United States, it is our duty to take action to this horrid issue that unfortunately not only occurs in America but throughout entire world. Child abuse is more than just bruises and broken bones, it is emotional damage that a child will have to carry with them for the rest of their lives. Since abuse can produce such long term pain, it tends to leave a negative impact on not just the individual but the society as a whole. In order to deal with child abuse, we must recognize the symptoms and report anything that may seem suspicious. Emotional, physical, sexual and neglect are the four most common forms of abuse, each having their own different symptoms. “Frequent injuries or unexplained bruises, welts, or cuts” (Child Abuse and Neglect 2) are a few warnings signs of physical abuse in children. Some of the warning signs for neglect include “clothes that the child is wearing do not fit, or not appropriate for the weather. Hygiene may be very bad or the child could be frequently late or missing school. (Child Abuse and Neglect 3) Children who suffer through sexual abuse show warning sings as well.
