Child Protective Services does try to contribute to a better quality of life for children, though growing statistics may say otherwise. This is not due to CPS’s own fault though, it is because people have to inform CPS about suspected abuse since they follow a residual perspective. Sometimes it happens and other times, it doesn’t. According to americanhuman.org, “According to the federally funded Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (1996), almost three times as many children are maltreated as are reported to CPS agencies.” CPS can’t stop abuse, if it is ignorant to the fact that abuse is happening. According to Maryland Child Protective Services, the core goals of CPS is to, “Protect children and assist parents or caretakers in providing proper care and attention to children, remedy and decrease the risk of continuing abuse and neglect, [and] provide an alternate plan of care for children when parents or caretakers are unable to prove proper and safe care for them.” This can be translated to, their goal is to help children to grow up safe and free. Democratic values, can be summarized as equality, justice and liberty. According to ushistory.com, “Democratic values support the belief that an orderly society can exist in which freedom is preserved. But order and freedom must be balanced.” Child Protective Service’s goals speak about freedom when it talks about finding a remedy, as well as, when it speaks about finding an alternate plan. CPS supports the democratic values, because its goal is to fix a broken society. When children are abused they lose their freedom, thus order and freedom are not balanced. CPS attempts to fix the inequivalent.Next, is social justice. Social justice and CPS’s goals are very similar. According to naswdc.com, “Beneath this practicality lies a strong value system that can be summarized in two words: social justice. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities. Social workers aim to open the doors of access and opportunity for everyone, particularly those in greatest need.” CPS’s goals are to give children social justice. Lastly, CPS’s goals are consistent with the values of professional social work. According to socialworkers.org, social work’s values are “service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence.” CPS’s goals are consistent with these, because CPS
