Even though it was rare, any member of the family could be beaten, sold into slavery, forced to work, or even legally killed(Farrell). 1760-1850 was the Industrial Revolution, in which it was a period of tech advancement and industrialization and the population grew in cities because of job opportunities. Children became a burden and had to find full time jobs to help families thus, child labor became extremely common(Farrell). During the Industrial Revolution in 1842, all mines were dug by hand and often flooded so miners waded through dirty water. They were paid by the amount of coal collected each day, but they had to pay Colliers (people who hauled coal to surface) from their own pocket money. To save money, miners brought kids and wives as colliers who weren’t paid and worked up to 18 hours a day(Farrell). The Industrial Revolution was a time of child labor because many factories hired children because they were easier to control, didn’t complain as much about poor conditions ,and didn’t demand high wages. Spinning and weaving were mostly done by women and children and many took jobs on textile mills and worked for 12-18 hours.
