This abuse is sometimes known as the “hidden abuse”. Sexual abuse doesn’t always involve bodies coming into contact sometimes; no one even has to touch for it to be sexual abuse. Exposing a child to sexual situation or material is sexually abusive even tough touching might not be involved. Sexual abuse occurs when the parent uses the child for sexual purposes or involves the child in sexual acts. 20.7% of adults have reported that they were sexually abused as a child (Child Help). Sexual abuse consists of acts such as, non contact abuse, making a child view a sex act, inappropriate sexual talk, and child pornography. There are a lot of signs that show if a child has been sexually abused like, difficulty sitting or walking, bloody underwear, and pain in the genital area. The outcomes of child abuse vary based on the child’s age at the time of the abuse, they type of abuse they are enduring, how frequent the abuse is happening, and the relationship between the child and the person abusing them. Some children that endear this abuse could have more coping abilities then others that could help them get through this in different ways. They could have a number of protective or promotive factors such as positive attachment, self esteem, intelligence, emotion regulation, humor, and independence, these factors could help them get through any negative event (Shaffer, 2012). Physical health consequences are most of the time immediate such as, bruising, or broken bones. NSCAW researchers found that 28% of children that were physically abused had a chronic health condition. Abusive head trauma and impaired brain development are only a few named. Abusive head trauma is an inflicted injury of to the head caused by either shaking a baby too hard or from blunt impact to the head. This type of physical abuse is the number one cause of most baby or infant death. Child abuse has also been shown to cause the brain to not form or grow properly, which results in impaired brain development.
