Child obesity in the United States is becoming a really big problem. Child obesity has grown by 11% in the past 10 years. That means that 17% of all elementary school students are either overweight or obese as of 2012. If this continues by 2020, 23% of all elementary school students will be obese ( http://www.obesity.org , 2014 ). This would be a huge problem with future generations. Now I will show you my information on childhood obesity.
First, childhood obesity is caused by overeating and not eating healthy foods. When kids eat too much they gain extra calories and store the extra calories in fat cells. They are supposed to use this energy later, but if they don’t use it they develop …show more content…
70% of all obese children had a risk for cardiovascular disease. Obesity also increases the risk of all these cancer types: breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, and prostate. There is also a risk for diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis ( http://www.cdc.gov , 2015) . Those are only a few of the many risks of childhood obesity. Now I will tell you how childhood obesity affects the community.
Finally, childhood obesity affects the communities in many ways. Kids who were persistently overweight throughout their life were most likely to not receive any education further than a high school diploma. People described in the previous sentence were also more likely to be in unemployment by the age of 40. Childhood obesity also affects your social life. Obese people are 26 times more likely to report discrimination the people with normal weight ( http://www.npr.org , 2010) . Kids are mostly teased by classmates, teachers, family, and friends which brings them down and makes them feel inferior
