Child Remembrances Are Always Drag If You Re Black Poem Analysis
Nikki Giovanni uses free verse, hyperbole, and symbolism in her poems, Nikki- Rosa, Ego Tripping, The Beep Beep Poem, and Kidnap Poem. Her style is to make the audience to create a descriptive picture and a deep understanding of Nikki’s perspective of her life of being a Black- American, which she didn’t let the color of her skin stop her from dreaming, creating her own imaginative life in her poet’s world. The first poetic technique that she uses in her poems is free verse. Free verse is a poetry without a fixed pattern of meter and rhyme. Some sentences in her poems like,“Child remembrances are always drag if you’re Black” In Nikki- Rosa
She cut the sentence “if you’re Black” to the next row in other to show that the people’s

The symbol she uses in here is “ poet “, that she is trying to say that if she is a poet or being a poet, she wants to steal people’s mind (kidnap the reader’s mind ). She determines the audience to get stuck in her words and lines, also to able to imagine a picture in her poems, in her thoughts.“I’d kidnap you put you in my phrases and meter you to jones beach or maybe coney island or maybe just to my house” in Kidnap Poem
The symbol in this quote are “ beach”, “ Coney island”, and “ my house”. To sum it up, all these symbols are represented as the world of her thoughts and words of her perspective where she wants the reader to stuck in.“Childhood remembrances are always a drag if you’re Black” in Nikki- Rosa. The word “drag “ Nikki uses in here is presented as “the problems” that a “ Black- American” has. It prefers to the harsh life that she suffers. However, who can notice that she actually enjoys living in Woodlawn with “ no inside toilet”. The way she uses symbolism is to compare all the things that people thought of the Black people live would

Nikki Giovanni was an African American poet, author, professor, and civil rights activist. She has won over 62 awards for her poetry, books, records, tapes, and CDs including seven NAACP image awards, the Langston Hughes award, and the Gwendolyn Brooks award (Giovanni, “Awards and Honors”). Nikki Giovanni was born on June 7, 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio (Aybar, “Nikki Giovanni”). She would often visit her grandparents, who lived in Knoxville, and they influenced her work greatly by teaching her from a young age to fight injustice (Aybar, “Nikki Giovanni”). Although the majority of Giovanni’s works were written with a militant tone, “Winter Poem” uses nature to express the same ideas she writes about in her other works.…

Fanning wrote the poem Child Carrier, which is one poem out of a set of poems, entitled Man Carrying A Corpse. I believe that this poem is about the main character, Man. He is trying to fit into a crowed elevator with a corpse draped over his shoulder. When he gets in the elevator a little girl reaches up and touches Corpse’s hand. The Man was startled that the little girl touched Corpse without any reservations. Then the little girl told Man not to worry as she readjusted the large load she was carrying under a blanket. I think that the little girl was also carrying a corpse of her own.…

Last I would like to say about Nikki Giovanni’s poems and how she expresses herself in them is that,a poem that she writes has to have meaning altho ugly because of how bad it may turn out. Yet just so boring and she states this in the poem of lines 5-6 “beautiful, ugly, blandly” and if that's not what she is referring to than she could just be talking about herself. This poem could mean many things (The Beep-Beep Poem) like she could be in her car driving thinking out loud because she may be going through lots of stress… this all I could say about Nikki…

The poem begins with a comparison between the colorful, alien saris made of “cloth from another planet” and her own “dull null Navy” that she wears every day. If you dig deeper, however, the implicit interpretation is how the speaker traps herself in a cage like the zoo animals. Claiming her able body is her bars, she cannot be noticed like the other zoo animals. She compares herself to the “white rat the foxes left” instead of the wondrous zoo animals people flock to see. She sees herself as forgotten and wants to break free of her monotonous life. Instead of being the someone without complaints nor comments, the subject wants people to wonder at her like she wonders at the saris as they walk…

Two examples of imagery Lauinger wrote were line five, “I’d light your Camels, pour your Jack;” and line three, “When you got up to scramble eggs.” The imagery in these lines and the others help the poem come to life off of the page. Another element that helps the poem come alive is figurative language. One example of figurative language is the hyperbole in lines 17 and 18, “You’re in it, doll, up to your eyeballs! Tears? Please! You’ll dilute our highballs,” An additional example of figurative language lies in line 15, “You didn’t know the pearls were fake …,” which I feel is a metaphor for the fake relationship that she is in and always relies on for her scams. The last element that brings this poem to life is sound. The poem has an example of onomatopoeia in line 24 using the word buzz to denote the sound of a telephone ringing. The poem also has examples of alliteration in line 12, “And bitter with the bittersweet,” and line 16, “Make no mistake.” The poem “Marvell Noir” is an end rhyme as the last syllable in each couplet rhyme. The rhyme scheme for this poem is aabbccddeeff…rr.. Out of all the poems I read in the poetry unit “Marvell Noir” by Ann Lauinger was one of my…

The duality in this poem creates an illustration of the poet’s struggle which refers to the rising and falling of the African American culture; Johnson wonders how the world sees African American during this period as a people or things. It shows that the poet is worried about the direction the African American culture will be moving. Men or things is the comparison which is “Do they really think that African American people are worthless than white american people?” So the poet uses the word “thing” it mean that whites do not appreciate and insult African American people that they do not value as a human. It might be a question the the poet wants to ask others if it will take a long time to change their thinking or if it will take great efforts, strides, and sacrifices.…

    Maya Angelou Still I Rise

Maya Angelou’s style is very intriguing and captivating due to her usage of tone. Maya Angelou was an American Civil Rights Activist, born in St Louis, Missouri, who lived through the Jim Crow Era - which, as mentioned before, was a critical period in terms of the rise of racial segregation in the United States. Unlike the majority of her kind, Angelou was extremely privileged - becoming a successful actress, author and poet. Although she is privileged and considerably well-off in her own personal endeavors, she is fully aware of the atrocity and inhumanity with which her fellow folk are being treated with on a daily basis. In the poem, she decants and expresses her frustration, but she does so with great subtlety and restraint. Although she uses a confrontational tone (by using the pronoun ‘you’) towards white people (which is the intended audience of the poem), she does not personally attack them in any way. She simply poses rhetorical questions which make the audience re-evaluate their way of thinking and cause them to truly see that their beliefs are founded upon hatred and false accusations. Aside from using a confrontational tone, Angelou also makes use of a perseverant tone which, through close analysis, entails a valuable message for people from all walks of life and, more importantly, the black folk who suffer from racial discrimination. “...I rise..”…

The works of Child of the America’s by Aurora Levins Morales and What It’s Like to be a Black Girl (For Those of You Who Aren’t) by Patricia Smith was because of the direct contrast of the statements “I am whole” in Morales poem verses “…and feeling like you’re not finished” in Smith’s poem. Both statements in these poems are strong, stating a completion of a human soul and both poems are in agreement that race is a part of the completion to the human soul. Levins Morales’ poem explains what it is really like to be of mixed race in America. Smith’s poem gives a deep, more individual approach of what it is like to be a black girl. Race is a background for both poems.…

In “Graduation,” Maya Angelou, an African American writer, traces her maturation during her eighth grade graduation by conveying her feelings and emotions, through the persona of Marguerite Johnson. Not only is she graduating from eighth grade, but she is also graduating from naiveté and moving onto maturity. With an expressive voice, Angelou includes imagery, through the use of similes and colors, as well as juxtaposition in her narrative essay to illustrate the racial inequality between the Negroes and the whites.…
