Aim: The suggestion is to carry out this visit in the second half of the term, to allow the learner time to have settled in.
The focus of the professional discussion, in the first part of the visit, will be the learner understands confidentiality and the policies and procedures within their placement.
The second part of the visit consists of a direct observation, in which the learner must demonstrate a range of communication methods, adapting the style to meet the needs of the child/children with whom they are working.
The learner will need to read a story to a small group of children.

Learners need to explain confidentiality and show that they understand what that means within their own role in placement.
They must discuss the setting’s storing of information and have an understanding of the policies and procedures within that placement.
Learners need to explain how they will engage all the children in activities and how activities encourage and support speech, language and communication development. They will need to explain the value of books and how they encourage communication and language development.
Learners may show you how the information is shared with parents/carers and where the information is stored.
Learners can use development understanding gained in CPLD Units 1 and 2.
