Earthquake
On February 27th 2010 at 3:34 an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred in Chile. The earthquake lasted 90 seconds and affected a total of 6 Chilean regions but the earthquake mainly occurred offshore of Maule region. The earthquake left 93% of Chile’s population with no electricity. This earthquake not only damaged Chile but it has permanently shortened the length of our days by 1.26 microseconds and moved the earth’s axis by 8 centimetres.
Tsunami
34 minutes after the Chile earthquake a tsunami occurred. The tsunami was 10 meters high when it FIRST arrived at Valparaiso, Chile. Constitución, Chile took the hardest hit from the tsunami. Tsunami warnings went out to 53 countries but only 8 countries actually received waves from the Chile tsunami.
Population …show more content…
The population of Chile, before the quake and tsunami, was 17,031,873 people.
486 people died because of the earthquake and 34 people died because of the tsunami, meaning that the population after the quake and tsunami was: 17,031,353. An estimated 1.5 million people were affected and/or displaced from the earthquake. More than 500,000 homes were damaged all over Chile, these places include: Santiago, Concepcion, and Valparaiso.
Environment
This disaster not only leaves Chilean people homeless but with pollution over top of their heads. Air pollution from the earthquake was caused by gas leaks (from vehicles, factories, etc.). The pollution was also caused by oil spills and because of the earthquake, many fires occurred resulting in loads of smoke put into the air, causing air
pollution.
Preparation
The Chilean people DID NOT prepare for this earthquake. The earthquake was completely unexpected; there was never any talk about an earthquake that could have occurred in Chile, but one did happen and Chile was “prepared” in the sense that earthquakes have occurred in that area before so there was a possibility of one happening but because the earthquake ACTUALLY happened it was a shock to everyone. If there is a prediction of an earthquake that will/can happen in Chile than, they prepare with these methods: evacuation plans, effective warning system (radios, television, etc.).
Economy
The Chile earthquake had an immediate effect on the Chilean economy but the problem was short term because of the strength of the Chile economy and government. For example, Chile’s economy was stable, honest and an organized government; they had a reserve of cash to help it recover quickly from the earthquake and tsunami. The only problems that Chile had to face was the lack of transportation (tsunami warnings, broken highways, etc), having no electricity, no water and no communication. Chile had very little problems from recovering from the earthquake because they had a very good economy before the earthquake and had a VERY low country debt and savings of 11 billion dollars. They used SOME of their savings for reconstruction of highways and buildings this also resulted in paying people to construct the buildings and highways meaning that jobs were created for people. Chile had a strong and noble government from the beginning and did not need any global help to help them recover from the damage done from, both, the tsunami and earthquake.
