1: The main reason that the one child policy was introduced was that the population of China was growing far too quickly. Data suggests that the one child policy has reduced China’s population by around 400 million, a huge amount. The one child policy was to save resources, land and natural resources. In 1976 the population of China was around 940 million, which had grown from 540 million in 1949- a 400 million gain in less than 30 years. This couldn’t go on and as the tradition in China is to have many children, as the children look after their parents in old age and other reasons, the one child policy had to be introduced as the people would not have few enough babies on their own. The gain in population caused the world to worry about an overpopulation catastrophe so a way to reduce births was needed-the one child policy.
2: The one child policy operates in a number of ways. Firstly the government tries to convince people that having only one child is the best thing for them. The way they do this is by employing the ‘granny police’ who look after the street and try to convince the residents about the one child policy. If you were to have one child though you get free healthcare and nursery and then to persuade people not to have another, you have to pay the entire healthcare and nursery fees back if you have a second baby. As well as this if you have another child then you could lose your job and pay fines. Any extra children are not entitled to get education or healthcare as well. Also if you are thinking about having another child the government might sterilise you or if you are pregnant force you to have an abortion if you refuse to have one. To have a single baby you must do a written test and go to family planning courses- which would teach Chinese not to have 2 children. Also in factories there are tell-tales who patrol the factory and ensure no one is pregnant who shouldn’t be- this stops pregnant women from being noticed.
