Chinatown is a devastating movie about the crisis that happened to LA back in the 30’s. A powerful man can do whatever he likes, Noah Cross (John Huston), the devil of the movie, the one who fathers the child of his own daughter. If we look closely and read between the lines, we can see that Polanski is drawing the whole situation of LA whose drowning into darkness, how powerful man rule the week people, hiding behind the best picture.
The movie highlights on another catastrophe staring Evelyn Mulwray (Diane Ladd), where we see how women were weaker than now, how they used to go through stuff and couldn’t even say a word about it. Her father rapped her when she was fifteen. First, it is based on real events that formed the California Water Wars. Besides that, it shows how dishonesty and power ruled the people beneath them, how these people were trying so hard to ignore the American Dream and make its land dry so people won’t get richer. On the other hand, we see love, loyalty and honesty between the ones who believed in America (Gittes and Evelyn) both of them revealed the truth to each other and tried to help each other as much as they can.
