Chinese Men Are Bad
The book The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan is where the relationships between mothers and daughters are developed through revelation of the horrors the mothers had to face back in China. The most difficult things Winnie, An-Mei’s mother, and Ying-Ying had to endure through were their husbands. Amy Tan portrays Chinese men in a negative way when looking at Wen Fu, Wu-Tsing, and Ying-Ying’s husband Lin Xiao.
Winnie was married off to a man known as Wen Fu, who comes from a well family with dirty business. After their marriage, Winnie realized what kind of man Wen Fu truly is. He makes Winnie do sexual things she never wanted to do, and when she refuses to do so, Wen Fu locks her out of the room completely naked. Wen Fu also points gun to her head while raping her, saying they will never get a divorce. When they have a daughter Yiku, Wen Fu actually beats a few months old Yiku to get his way with Winnie. There are also times when Wen Fu has cheated on Winnie with other women such as Min and the house servant girl. These are just things that make Wen Fu a horrible husband, but also he is a bad person. Wen Fu is a pilot for the Chinese Air Force but in times of war, he flies his plane the other way away from the Japanese war planes. He claims he is chasing Japanese planes but in reality; he is just flying away while his friends die. These specific claims obviously points out that Wen Fu is portrayed negatively in the book The Kitchen God’s Wife by Amy Tan.
Wu-Tsing’s second wife could not give him a son so they hatched a plan to find a girl for Wu-Tsing to rape and take their child preferably a boy to claim as theirs. The unlucky An-Mei’s mother was at the wrong place at the wrong time and fell victim. Their horrific plan was successful and An-Mei’s mother lost everything including her real family, as they did not believe she was raped, instead went around sleeping with rich men.
